Judge rules against mother's name choice.

Some names are so bizarre, we can't believe they've ever been given to children. But a recent landmark case just went a step further by telling a mother she can't give her newborn twins the names she chose.

The mother, who is from Powys, Wales, attempted to name her offspring "Cyanide" and "Preacher."  She believed "Cyanide" was a pretty name for a little girl with positive implications since it's the poison that killed both Hitler and his follower Joseph Goebbels, according to Metro. She also argued that she had the right to name her own children. However, Justice Eleanor King ruled that the name could cause emotional harm to the child in the future.

"It is hard to see how ... the twin girl could regard being named after this deadly poison as other than a complete rejection of her by her birth mother," said King.

The twins, now 8 months old, were reportedly conceived of rape. They were placed in foster care, along with their three half-siblings, due to the mother's history of mental illness and drug and alcohol abuse.

Social workers from Powys County Council brought the case to the British Appeal Court. An injunction had previously been issued to prevent the mother from formally registering the names.

"This is one of those rare cases where the court should intervene to protect the girl twin from emotional harm," said King

While the judge acknowledged that "Preacher" wasn't as bad of a name, she decided it was in the best interest of the twins to be renamed by their half-siblings.

If the children are in foster care, how is it the mother has any rights anyway?

So there are now 5 unwanted kids in foster care? At least the poor baby is spared that name.

And I'm not sure what middle name goes with "Cyanide?"

I think the judge did the right thing.

It sounds like the Mom has too many problems, to make a good choice on names for the children.

She sucks! What despicable mother chooses hurtful names for her babies. I am so glad my parents were boring & picked a perfectly normal name for me.

Well, if you don't k ow what it is Cyanide does sound like a pretty word.
I can see how someone with emotional and mental problems would see it, at least.

I wonder what a judge would if it was a celebrity naming their kid that.

And those are not unwanted. They were removed. The mother might be insane, but that doesn't mean she doesn't want them.

And now, we have a case in which a court has ruled against the use of a name. As much as I get the reason, where will this lead?

I totally agree with the celebrities naming their kids strange things & nobody bats an eye.  Didn't Michael Jackson name his son Blanket?

This was in Wales so hopefully it won't come into play here.  There is one European country that you have to pick from an approved list of names & if you want to name it something else you have to go to court for them to decide.

The whole thing is just sad.

I don't know much about this lady but it doesn't sound like she was trying to be malicious. It sounds like she is severely mentally ill and is being impregnated repeatedly by people around her that don't have her best interest. She can't be a mother.

They need to either sterilize her or house her in a facility where this can't continue to happen.

Well, I have a problem with controlling what a parent can name her child. I have a problem with an insane woman raising children. And I have a problem with insane people procreating.

Ugh.

That is just plain stupid.  Poor kid.  Don't these parents understand their child will spend a lifetime with their bad decision?

That's a topic for a whole different thread.

How many different ways can you spell Brittany/ Hayley/ Chastity, etc.?

Well, when I chose the name Caitlyn, I hadn't heard it before. It was the name of a character in a book I was reading. I liked it, found out it was Celtics and a form of Katherine which happens to be the name of my great aunt.

Fast forward to preschool, there were 2 others with the name.

Katelyn and Kaitlin.

Since then, there have been several, and spelled all kinds of way.

But I've only seen it spelled Caitlyn a few times.

I'm always torn over Caitlyn.  Your way is my favorite way to spell it, but I love Katie as a nickname, and I don't like that with a C, and I think it would be weird to not match the first letter.

I gave a lot of thought to this.  If I had the opportunity to name another girl, that would have been her name.

I was torn between Caitlyn and Penelope.

Caitlyn was relieved when I told her.

If I had had a girl, she would have been Sierra. After the mountain range where I grew up.
