Q. Take a hitchhike: My husband is an incredible man, and has a huge heart. However, he has on several occasions picked up hitchhikers on the side of the road and given them rides to wherever they need to go. He thinks it it no big deal, and that it is, in fact, his duty to help people in need. This is my dilemma. I am much more wary of strangers and have heard countless horror stories over the years, which I feel back me up. He thinks I am being paranoid and cites that nothing bad has happened yet. I have forbidden him from doing this with our son in the car, but this has not stopped him from doing this with his young sister or his elderly grandmother with him. He even gave a ride to three men at once! Outnumbered! Maybe these travelers are harmless or in trouble, but what if they are armed or dangerous? I think he is too naïve, and he thinks I am cold-hearted. Who is right?
A: Hitchhiking is relatively safe but is often perceived as an outrageous risk. Your husband has accepted your compromise (which I think is reasonable!) and doesn’t pick up hitchhikers with your son in the car. If he wants to occasionally give a stranger a ride, the odds are on his side that it will not end in murder or mayhem. You’re not cold-hearted, just misinformed about the general risk.

I always wonder what one would do if they picked up someone with small children. Cops aren't going to care if they are hitchhikers when writing you a ticket for kid not being in a safety seat.
Here in the State, no I would not. I did it as a teenager but won't do it now.
In the islands, it is common. You point down at the road and someone will usually stop and give you a ride, either to your destination or as far as they are going.
60 years ago I used to hitchhike a lot to go on a vacation, or back and forth from home for part time work in the summer vacation. Never thought a thing about it, BUT that was in the Midwest and a completely different time and place. The worst experience I had was being picked up by 4 college kids who were drunk and drove like Holy H... Really scared me... I would never hitchhike now, it is just too dangerous. Lots of drugs, nuts, etc. out there....
Haven't seen a hitch hiker around here in a decade or more.

My step dad picked up a hitchhiker who pulled a knife on him, luckily he had a gun handy. I don't think that stopped him from picking up people though.

That happened in MT and the guy killed the man his wife and daughter. Nope would never do it. I can call for help for them on my cell and go on. Too dangerous now IMHO for me anyway

In the 60's my dad used to hitch from Chicago to Cleveland and back all the time. Once he was picked up by a "redneck" who drove my dad waaaay out of the way, onto a dirt road and lectured him the whole time about being a long haired godless hippy freak. My dad is lucky he survived that incident. I was always taught never to hitch because of that story and I also never give rides to hitch hikers because of it.

She can't stop what he does when she's not with him, but his picking up hitchhiker's over her objections when she or the kids are in the car is completely disrespectful and stupid.
He has to agree not to do that.
And then, for the times he's alone, she needs to make she she has a good life insurance policy.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
Have none of these people, either drivers or hitch hikers, ever watched a movie?
They're always killers, and insane. Both of them.

Have him watch The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer. That's a scary frickin' movie.
OMG, yes! My ex rented that one for us one time when my car broke down and I accepted a ride. Of course, I accepted a ride because he refused to come get me when I was in an accident. Told me to have the tow truck driver give me a lift. (The owner of the Towing company was a friend). RB
I used to pick up hitch hikers frequently back in the 80s. One time it was a woman running from her abusive husband who chased us. We dropped her off at the hospital. I would not stop now.
My previous next door neighbor's husband stopped when he was in their RV & picked up two young men and a woman. They tortured him before killing him. That scared the crap out of me when she told me. It happened before I moved in. I never met him.
I voted too risky, however I did pick up a hitchhiker one time. There was a downpour that happened one afternoon and it literally came out of no where. I came upon a guy walking on the street who had just gotten dropped off at the bus stop and I just couldnt let it be. I gave him a ride to where he needed to be.
I stand at the bus stop and every morning a retired bus driver picks me up. I used to chit chat to him so now he gives me the ride. He knows where I'm going.

So you chat up the butcher to get the good steaks & the bus driver to get free rides........We see how you roll Trudy!!
