Mother is forced to dump FOUR GALLONS of breast milk after trying to take it through security at Heathrow airport

  • Jessica Coakley Martinez had collected milk for her eight-month-old son

A nursing mother was forced to dump nearly four gallons of breast milk after trying to take it through security at an airport.

Security staff allegedly made Jessica Coakley Martinez discard the liquid form of the milk and a two gallon frozen block intended for her eight-month-old son at Heathrow Airport's terminal five.

The upset mother-of-two from California took to Facebook to rant in a open letter: 'You humiliated me and made me feel completely defeated as a professional and a mother.'

The angry message, which began 'I normally would not post something this personal, but I do not remember the last time I felt so justly upset,' was shared nearly four thousand times after it was posted on Thursday.

She added: 'You made me dump out nearly two weeks worth of food for my son.'

In it, Ms Coakley Martinez detailed how she had collected the breast milk by pumping it everywhere - from airplane bathrooms to closets and conference rooms.

She said it was 'extremely exhausting' and 'stressful' working abroad for a job, with some trips spanning 15 days and covering eight cities, while her infant was at home

Ms Coakley Martinez, who also has a second son, said that she felt like a failure when she had to use formula, before recounting what happened when she tried to bring her 'giant block of breast milk' back home.

The limit for liquids in carry-on luggage is 100 millilitres according to regulations posted on Heathrow's site, which states that larger amounts must go in checked luggage.

In comparison, U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA), states that baby formula, breast milk, and juice in quantities larger than 3.4 ounces is permitted in carry-on baggage.

The TSA also tells passengers to inform them if they are carrying baby formula, breast milk, or juice in excess of 3.4 ounces.

Ms Coakley Martinez's letter to Heathrow security says she became tearful and 'irate' because she felt as if no-one in security was interested in compromise.

She claimed that she was willing to meet officials halfway by leaving the liquid milk.

She tried to argue that she should be allowed to carry on more than 300 ounces of frozen milk as it was no longer in liquid form.

'Rules and procedures at airport security are rarely universally enforced because similar to police officers, a significant aspect of your job is public trust and engagement, which includes using your judgment regarding appropriate enforcement in complex situations,' she said.

Ms Coakley Martinez added that she had offered to leave the checkpoint to stow the breast milk in her checked luggage but claims staff would not allow this.

Airport officials allegedly confiscated the milk as a 'non-compliant item'.

The mother conceded that she should have checked regulations before boarding the flight, but added: 'This was deeply personal. This was my son’s health and nourishment'.

A spokesman for Heathrow stated that the airport had to comply with all aviation security regulations set by the Department for Transport.

They added: 'We know that know that parents have particular travel needs, so we have developed a dedicated section on our website which provides relevant advice on breast milk.

'If you are travelling with a baby or infant you can carry a reasonable amount outside of your liquid bag for your journey. To assist security screening, please do not carry these items in a flask.

'If you are not travelling with a baby or infant all your liquids must comply with the 100ml rule. Spare supplies should be packed in hold baggage.'

Most people would have enough common sense to call in advance if they planned on trying to take 4 gallons of fluid on an airplane!

Well, i mean if my baby was hungry i nursed the baby. And, i pumped while at work but then i would use that during the day to send to day care, so not sure how she got 4 gallons ahead.
And, she should have the sense to know you can't bring liquids onto the plane. She should have made some effort to get this preapproved or something.

She was away on a trip, so she was pumping all the time and saving it to take back to him.

I am completely upset for her. I hate pumping and even a couple ounces wasted feels like a huge defeat. I would be crying if I had to throw out that much milk. But knowing that I would have double and triple checked the rules and made some phone calls to get it approved, not just shown up and hoped for the best.

So the kid wasn't with her, she was gone for two weeks, he is 8 months old.

How long do people breast feed? And what was he eating while she was gone? How long does beat milk hold and how was she keeping it cold and frozen on a business trip?

I breastfed both of my kids until they were toddlers. I didn't plan on that & was very thankful that it worked out, as much for me as for them.

The child would likely have been starting solids by then, supplemented by whatever milk she had already pumped.

She mentions storing the milk in hotel freezers. She likely had insulated bags as well.

BUT, like others have said, if she went to that much trouble to pump & store the milk, CALL THE AIRPORT in advance.

She could have bought some dry ice and a cooler and shipped it home.

She needs to accept responsibility for her part. She should have made the effort to find out if and how to transport this.

Its very common to breastfeed until age 2 now as that is what the WHO recommends.

They eat real food too, and drink real milk. Just like if they were drinking formula you would start feeding them real food between 4-6 months but they keep drinking formula until a year- same with breastfeeding. After a year it's common to only nurse before nap and bedtime and maybe another time or two during the day.

Yeah, I don't understand why it's so hard to comprehend.
