The House Armed Services Committee narrowly approved a measure that would require women to register for the Selective Service. This enables women to be drafted into the military if a draft was ever called, American Military News reported.
The current law only requires men between the ages of 18 and 26 to register for the military draft through the Selective Service program. Women have not had to register for the draft because not all military positions were available to women. However, there has been increased pressure to treat women as equal to men in the military.
Congressman and Marine Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and introduced the measure as a way to get people talking about the issue. He initially did not think it would pass — and it barely did, American Military News reported.
It passed by only two votes, 32-30.
However, Rep. Hunter said he opposes the idea of adding women to the draft. He’s also opposed to opening infantry and special operations positions to women.
Congressmen Joe Heck (R-Nev.), Chris Gibson (R-N.Y.) and McSally (R-Ariz.), all also Iraq War veterans, support including women in the draft and Selective Service.
The last draft was in 1973.
