The news this evening said that the fires have shifted north into the work camps where they were housing evacuees from the city, so now they are evacuating the camps. Everyone I know that was up there and wasn't local has gotten home safely and there are lots of reports along the way of people setting up trucks at rest stops with jerry cans of gas, food, water, medication, etc..

FB is loaded with information of where to go to get necessities and additional medications like insulin for evacuees who couldn't get enough before getting out.

Labatts brewery actually stopped their beer production today and produced 200,000 cans of drinking water to be distributed at evacuee centers. Even the Edmonton Syrian refugees have been stepping up and housing evacuees from Fort Mac to give back what they have been given in coming to Canada. It's a beautiful thing to watch, but the destruction is horrendous. Fort Mac is a ghost town. Completely destroyed and abandoned.

There's a new fire now; Fort St. John is burning and it's moving south towards Prince George/Smithers and the Alberta border. Great - just what we need.

UPDATED
B.C. wildfires near Fort St. John spark evacuations
A thousand people forced out and thousands more on alert
By Wanyee Li and Betsy Trumpener, CBC News Posted: May 06, 2016 10:31 AM PT Last Updated: May 06, 2016 4:23 PM PT

A smaller wildfire near Fort St. John, B.C., merged with a larger one on Thursday. (Trevor Matheson/Twitter)

About 1,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes in northeastern B.C., as one of the province's biggest wildfires forced a new evacuation order and a dramatic expansion of an evacuation alert zone.

As the Beatton Airport Road fire grew to 12,000 hectares, 500 people were told to leave their rural homes immediately.

Another 500 people in the nearby Blueberry River First Nation are also leaving.

Meanwhile, the evacuation alert zone has expanded dramatically.

About 5,000 people living along a 40-kilometre stretch of the Alaska Highway are being told to be ready to leave at a moment's notice.

On Friday afternoon, the expanded evacuation alert zone stretched from Mile 85 of the Alaska Highway all the way down through Charlie Lake to just north of Fort St John.

An emergency reception centre has been set up in Fort St John.

"We've got some pretty active fires going right now," said Shannon Anderson, emergency operations centre director for the Peace River Regional District. "It's something we haven't seen in our area for quite some time."

On Thursday, the fire was about 45 kilometres north of Fort St. John, at Mile 80 on the Alaska Highway.

On Friday, the fire jumped the Alaska Highway and continued to grow.

A travel advisory for the Alaska Highway remains in effect and a smoke advisory has been issued for the North Peace.

Fort McMurray fire even bigger. It's spreading tentacles and nothing seems to stop it.
All attempts to fight it from the air are fruitless due to very high winds.
It's expected to double in size by tomorrow evening.

Officials expect the fire in the Fort McMurray area to grow bigger on Saturday, and say by the end of the day it could swell to 2,000 square kilometres, an area three times the size of Edmonton or Toronto

Lots of postings up of animal rescues - weird how there are no separated family posts ... remember Katrina? It's strange that there isn't more human destruction. A miracle, yes. But also strange.

I heard an anchor on NBC mocking us; "That's all the firefighters you have? If this fire was in the States, we'd have THOUSANDS of firefighters on the scene!"

How about a little help instead of mocking?  Who helps you when you have natural disasters? We do.

Who was the first one on the scene during Katrina? We were.

Thanks for nothing.

Ahh just read up on it.  Apparently Alberta doesn't budget for Forrest fires so don't have the manpower.  Tell me, what are you personally doing to fight the fire?  I mean as a Canadian, I would think you would do what you could before you blame others.

I am so sorry that no one is helping. I can't imagine why. I feel horribly that people are just standing idle. It isn't right.

I'm not a firefighter. Duh.

Even Russia is offering IlyushinII transport planes converted into water bombers water and specialists.

USA just shakes its head and says "Too bad they don't have enough firefighters. That's a shame. Now, back to Trump."

As a Canadian, I am personally involved in collecting funds to send to the relief efforts to ensure that the evacuation centers in Northern BC, central Alberta and Saskatchewan have enough money to continue to provide housing, food, clothing, medicine and other necessities to the tens of thousands of evacuees that have descended on them.

As a therapist I am offering my services for those in crisis who were from my area but working in Fort Mac or Fort St. John and have had to come home and lost their jobs and livelihoods.

When it is time to rebuild Fort Mac I may go up there and do what I can to clear out debris. That is what we do when we lose an entire city. When High River flooded and the whole city was lost the reclamation took months and it took the people of neighbouring cities going there everyday to rebuild. That will happen with Fort Mac.

But let's have some perspective on the magnitude of this disaster. How many States fit in one province? How many States would be burning right now if this fire was in the USA? This fire is massive. Nobody has enough firefighters for this. Help is needed. From anywhere.

I don't know if the US is or isn't sending anybody but perhaps the reason US firefighters aren't showing up to fight the fire is because of rules they must follow. Perhaps they can't or risk losing their jobs per their contract. Perhaps Obama doesn't want to send anyone for some reason. I don't know. Just positing a theory.

Ah. Well, I gathered it was about firefighters.

Aid. Well. Maybe Obama doesn't want to. I don't know. He doesn't seem interested is bolstering US relations with other countries. At least, not those who we should care about.

You didn't really think Obama cares about Canada, did you?

U.S. firefighters cannot leave their posts without permission, and most of them are paid a pittance and can't afford to just leave their job and fly to Canada. It would need to be government arranged and sponsored. So, yep - get pissed at our country. A lot of us are over tons of stuff.

Just remember - Obama runs it.

I do think it is disingenuous to compare this with disasters like Katrina. Everyone has been safely evacuated and currently there are no lives in danger.

The fire must be beyond massive. We have had smoke laden air in our state for four days. The Blue Angels flight show was canceled on Friday due to the heavy smoke from Canada. IN Lincoln NE!!!

That wasn't the case a few days ago.  There was no way of predicting that Fort Mac would be safely evacuated.  The evacuations of the evacuated sites is still ongoing as the fire is still spreading.  There is no way of knowing that more townships will not be threatened.

Tens of thousands of people are displaced and homeless.  With no hope of going home and no hope of regaining their livelihood.  That doesn't sound safe to me.  It sounds like some help is needed.  Not just today, but on a long-term ongoing basis.

I'm not denying that, but when the lives were in danger, it came about very quickly, without enough warning for anyone.  Canada did a wonderful job getting those people evacuated, it was done quickly and efficiently before anyone else even had a chance to respond.  But while they will need help, their lives are not in immediate danger now.

And here's a sincere question - has Canada requested aid? Because it's not like we can just send people into another country without their request or consent.

Alberta requested aid from British Columbia and were denied.
www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/fort-mcmurray-fire-no-b-c-help-on-the-way-1.3565822

The Russians have offered aid with no response.

There are a lot of government protocols to follow.

Apparently, the area needs permission to ask for assistance outside the Province? It's very odd.

Canadians are responding very well and $30 million has been donated already.

I'm pretty sure our government just passes emergency assistance bills - it has nothing to do with matching.  But it is a good way to incentivize giving.

That doesn't answer the question of why they are not requesting outside help.  Or why B.C. declined to send firefighters.

The normal protocol is to request help.  We can't go without a request or invitation.  Why Obama is not discussing this with your government is beyond me.  But from articles I've seen, y'all just want to handle it yourself.

Canada declines Russian offer of water bombers, firemen to help fight Alberta fire

FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestEmailPrint

As an “out-of-control” wildfire continues to grow around the oil town of Fort McMurray in the western Canadian province of Alberta, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declined on Monday an offer by Russia to dispatch massive water bombers and fire fighting specialists to battle the blaze.

Trudeau thanked Russia for the offer but said there was no need for it.

“One of the things that has been touching over the past days is not just how Canadians have been stepping up from across the country to support their friends in Fort McMurray but how the international community has been affected and responding to this tragedy, to this ongoing challenge,” Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa.

“The good news is from the support that we have seen from Canadians across the country, different provinces sending over waterbombers, engaged in all sorts of different ways, firefighters coming from all across the country to help, there is no need to accept any international assistance at this point.”

Russia’s Minister of Emergency Measures Vladimir Puchkov offered to dispatch heavy water bombersbased on the Il-76 transport air plane platform and experts on fighting wildfires on May 5th.

The fire around Fort McMurray, in the heartland of Canada’s oil sands industry, has already destroyed over 1,600 structures and has forced nearly 90,000 people in the oil producing region to flee their homes. The fire has also resulted in the shutdown of about one third of Canada’s oil production.

The government of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper sharply downgraded Canada’s relations with Russia over the Kremlin’s annexation of Crimea in the spring of 2014 and its support for pro-Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine. However, the Liberal government of Justin Trudeau, which came to power last fall, has advocated for a re-engagement with Russia while still criticizing President Vladimir Putin’s policies in Ukraine.

Currently there are more than 500 firefighters battling the blaze, which is now covering an area of approximately 161,000 hectares in and around Fort McMurray, along with 15 helicopters, 14 air tankers and 88 other pieces of equipment, according to the latest Alberta government update.
