Plenty of people who suffered sexual abuse got help and went on to have a great life but let's kill this 20 something girl because we haven't come up with the right treatment for her. You people are sick.

If you attempt suicide, you are considered dangerous and unstable and put into a psych hold.
So how is wanting to die not unstable?
Now. I don't have a psych degree, but I can not rationalize how one is competent but the other is not.
I mean, water is wet.
So, if someone is suffering excruciating pain due to MS or cancer, and wants to die, they're unstable?
It's more stable to want to prolong the misery and pain?
I'll admit, I'm a bit torn when it comes to terminally ill. Those who have done everything and nothing worked and it's just a matter of time.
I watched my pawpaw go from vibrant and active to dead in less than 4 months.
I saw the pain he was in. The effects of the pain maintenance drugs that did nothing for the pain but caused him to have extreme delusions and become violent or rendered him unconscious for 18 hours straight.
I watched him waste away to an empty shell.
But through it all, he fought. When you asked him if he wanted something for pain he would say no. Not until it was beyond his ability to deal with it.
I was torn and wanted his pain over.
But he'd smile and say "gotta keep fighting".
But this is not a person in end stages of a terminal disease. This woman was actually improving. She was making progress. And she just gave up.
I won't lie. It pisses me off when someone throws away life. Especially when I have seen people fight to their last breath for just ONE more second.
No. This woman did NOT have a RIGHT to die.
She had a right to live.
And ANYONE who advocates for the ability to throw life away is simply scum.
This woman could have been just fine if she hadn't been so weak.
FIGHT for life. Don't throw it away.
IT'S NOT YOUR LIFE!
Who are you to demand people fight for it? Do what's right FOR YOU. You want to fight, then fight.
You have no right to demand others do the same, especially when faced with horrific pain.
So just give up?
Selfish, weak mindedness.
Not surprising coming from you.
Again, do what's right for you and I'll do what's right for me.
Busybody Christians, wanting EVERYONE to suffer, because they think it's the right thing to do.
Not your body, not your suffering, not your pain and most certainly not your business.
Thankfully, I live in a country that totally disagrees with you...

Yeah, thankfully, you can stick your proboscis in everybody's business and force people to suffer.
Somebody should have fought for her when she wasn't strong enough to fight for herself. :( She was only in her 20s this could have been turned around. She had so much life ahead of her and it could have been fixed.
I've seen people suffer from depression and suicide will make sense to them, it's a symptom of the disease! You are supposed to treat it! Not tell them to give up and go with the flow of their ailment!
I hope to god if there is anybody reading this story that has been contemplating suicide that this doesn't make you think it's the way to go. Don't let anybody talk you into it. It's the wrong choice!
You need and deserve help to overcome those thoughts.
Anybody who encourages or assist in a depressed person committing suicide should be charged with attempted murder or, if successful in causing the death, murder! Straight up!
There is no magic pill or miracle cure for the types of issues this woman was facing. She was bed ridden and her quality of life was horrid.
Given that a panel of medical experts agreed on her diagnosis, how does one completely ignore this?
If Bernie Sanders becomes president, there will be a magic pill! Free for everyone! So that's solved.
As for the bolded, that could be said for the majority of severely depressed people. They can't get out of bed, life is horrid. It is treatable. No, it's not easy and it's not over night. I don't see where that claim was made.
It's easy to talk a depressed person into death. You are supposed to treat the depression. Not kill the person.
For the record, I do believe in assisted suicide. It should be reserved for those that have diseases that take away a person's faculties. Diseases where the body is literally being ravaged and destroyed to the point of death. Diseases where the person is going to die with 100% certainty because of it anyway and at a stage where they suffer inability to eat/sleep/use the bathroom because their body is physically unable. They are unable to conduct a suicide on their own even. That. Far. Gone.
This lady could have killed herself. Something was stopping her. They just went ahead and made it easy and it probably made sense to her even more after she found somebody who agreed with her thoughts of death and was willing to do it for her.

What about the other 2 I mentioned. Should a Down Syndrome person be able to make that call? Or my friends with the mentality of a 2 year old?

Sure drag down Mother Teresa. You really don't have a soul.
It's a FACT that she said it.
Insults are allowed here now?
flan
Weltz has said over and over that she does not have a soul. How is that an insult when those are her words?
It's one thing for welts to ask you to PROVE the existence of a soul. I'm sorry you can't see the difference.
INTENT matters & the post in question is crystal clear.
flan
No...Weltz said that she does not have a soul. There was a big ole long thread about it. So, you need to keep your nose out of things you know nothing about...

In case you overlooked it, the article clearly states that two *years* prior to her death a second opinion was given, which shows this is not a decision taken on a whim. It's a process that can take years before a decision is made. The woman wanted to end her suffering, the doctors (who are independent doctors) agreed that there was little they could do to improve her quality of life. So, who are we to judge? I find it terribly frustrating that some people seem to think they have more say in someone else's life than the person themselves.
Saying you care about someone yet wanting them to continue on in undeniable pain and suffering is hardly the sort of care I believe in. However, I do believe strongly that you must be mentally competent to make this decision and have exhausted all avenues of possible relief.
Hey. Just because you can't find it in that library you are supposed to be working at, is not my problem.

I believe terminally ill people of any age should be able to refuse treatment. I believe people in pain should be able to get pain relieving medication. I believe in allowing nature to take its course.
I do not believe in doctors choosing to end the life of a mentally ill patient.

I too have concerns about the mentally ill. If a person is found competent and they wish to end their own suffering, who am I to force them to endure it?
Well, I have to go out and do some shopping.
If I get hit by a car and end up on life support, with no hope of recovery, I hope they pull the plug, as per my wishes.
Despite you working on commission and wanting me to stay that way. That would suck.

There are degrees of pain, some pain is so horrendous and constant that I completely understand not wanting to live with it.
