It's not a woman's duty

this is a new account opened on apparently Twitter. @feminismvibes This is their opening statement.

I wonder what you folks think about it:

It's not a woman's duty to make sure she isn't assaulted when she leaves the house. It's your duty not to assault her.

There are many other statements, I wonder what you would add to it...

No one should assault anyone, male or female. Period.

And that would be the better message, IMHO.

I agree Czech. You stated it much better.

I actually disagree with their statement somewhat. It is a person's duty to some degree to make sure they aren't assaulted. You know the simple basic safety measures. Stay in well lit places at night, be aware of your surrounding, stay away from bad neighborhoods, don't walk around with ear buds in so someone can sneak up on you, etc..........

sorry the premise was to formulate what is a woman's duty...I should have been more explicit.

Oh, ok.

It is a woman's duty to get the most out of her life.

Well, that's getting harder and harder to do.  Men are allowed everywhere, now.  A woman can't even use the restroom without wondering if a man will be in there.

And the same liberals who want to make women share private areas with men also want to take their guns away.

My goodness, I see a lot of hate spewing forth for "liberals". lol

Women AND men should to their best to make smart choices that will keep them out of harms way.

Duty? what does that have to do with anything?

I'd call it more of a feminist extremist site.

There is such a thing as too far, I am all for equality and I feel women have made great strides in the work place.
As the Old boys club dies off even more changes will be made.

I don't think men need to be put down, degraded or maligned in order to achieve equality. Some of these feminist groups are over the top...extreme.

Yup - always be aware of your surroundings, have something to use as a weapon, be trained in some form of self-protection, stay in groups and be pro-active about protecting yourself.  Taking care of you is definitely your responsibility.  Nobody else will take responsibility for you and you can't expect them to.

They certainly won't.  They won't even let you feel safe in a bathroom.   And if the women get attacked, shame on them - they obviously weren't doing enough to protect themselves.

 But that's dumb.

OF COURSE people shouldn't commit crimes.  Duh.

But simply saying that isn't going to prevent anything.  Criminals don't base their activities based on what any person, group of people, or even the entire society says or thinks.

What, you think just simply telling a criminal not to commit a crime will work?  You mean all our jails are chock full of criminals simply because sh!t, we didn't think to tell them they shouldn't have done that?

Just because I don't assault women,

that doesn't allow women to make themselves easy targets.

 It's NOT an either/or situation.

You want to walk down a street in a dangerous part of town at night by yourself, be my guest.

You want to leave your car unlocked & parked in a dark corner of the lot, ditto.

And that goes for BOTH sexes.

I thought it was a simple question.

OK I withdraw my question because I no longer know how to talk to folks here.

There is a unique set of mindsets here.

It usually is a simple question, and most people would answer it rationally.  But, you posted this at a time when the answers aren't so simple because of other issues being discussed on the board.  To answer your question the way it should be answered would belie their arguments on another thread.

Right. It's everyone's individual responsibility to conduct themselves with common sense and caution.

Because let's face it some people svck.

The use of the word duty is interesting in this case. It makes me wonder if the quote is in response to something else. For example, there are countries where the status quo cultural attitude is that it IS a woman's duty to not get attacked. Like countries where there are honor killings of women who were raped and the woman's family believes it was the woman's fault, and she brought shame on the family. Even when she clearly did nothing to invite or provoke the attack. There are cultures where people think this way. I think this statement might be spoken as a challenge to such beliefs.

"It's not a woman's duty to make sure she isn't assaulted when she leaves the house. It's your duty not to assault her."

It is my duty to keep myself as safe as possible.

I can not control other people.

But I can make it as hard as possible for someone to hurt me.

Think about it, do you guard you PIN numbers, use secure passwords, lock your doors, avoid certain places?

That's taking responsibility for your safety.

Women especially should be careful.
What is wrong with saying that? Don't put yourself in harms way.

If I see a dark alley and wisely decide not to walk down it in the middle of the night and another woman does decide to, and she gets attacked, it could have been avoided. RIGHT?

If I say oh that is horrible, that poor woman... I never would have walked down that alley at night.... I get verbally attacked for having common sense.

Its a no win.

Largely, in many ways, EVERYONE is responsible for their own safety.

No one can "force" you to wear your seat belt, or put your phone down so you don't text and drive, or lock your doors at night, or to not throw lit cigarettes in the garbage, or whatever.
