Sports Authority closing stores

Going out of business sales will start this week and go until the end of August.

Retailer Sports Authority will begin liquidation sales at all its stores next week after failing to find a buyer that would keep the chain alive, according to published reports.

The chain, which has 10 locations in metro Atlanta, hinted earlier this month that it may close for good, but left a little hope that bankruptcy proceeding could give it a second life.

But a story from the Denver Business Journal said the winning bid for the company’s assets were liquidators that plan to sell the company’s merchandise in going out of business sales, expected to start as early as May 25.

Others struggling include Kmart, Kohl’s, Sears, Macy’s, Target and Best Buy.Colorado-based Sports Authority joins a growing list of big box retailers that have struggled because of online shopping and changing consumer spending habits.

It's the end of an era. Internet sales are kicking the "big box" stores in the wallet. Hard.

I honestly believe that it's only a matter of time before most of them go under. The only way for them to survive would be to undercut the prices of the internet retailers, and we all know that's not going to happen.

Sports Authority started their GOB sale already in my area.

I disagree that internet sales will make stores go under.  Internet sales are reshaping the need for brick and mortar.  I see it as an opportunity for more small business, specialty type stores.  People still want to go shopping.

Well, we have Dunham's which is a smaller sporting goods store. And, there is Dick's which is a big box warehouse type sports store. That one is out of town and when we are out of town the kids always want to go to Dick's Sporting Goods cuz they have everything. Also, Olympia Sports opened up in a neighboring town. I might have to take out a loan though to keep my daughter well dressed in Nike Sports bras which cost a small fortune, lol.

You needed to be my buddy!  When I got all Nike stuff free! I am the sample size.  They'd hand me everything.   It killed me last week to buy a pair of shoes!  At least my North Face buddies still hook me up.
