You're not the boss of me...

But I agree with you. Your wedding is only ONE day.

My daughter is so not a bridezilla, but a few times things have stressed and then I remind her that the wedding is one day, and at the end of it, if she and her fiancé are married, then no matter what happens it doesn't matter .  The marriage is the part that you work towards and cherish and is forever (well in most cases   but I do not say that to her)

the wedding  = 1 day

the marriage = forever

I just do not understand these crazed bridezillas...I think I would *ground* her to her room if she pulled that

I don't think I've ever been to a potluck wedding reception. Nor asked to chip in.

I'll need $100 and a casserole with a potato chip topping.  Get on it!

I'm sure it's a regional thing, too.

It isn't uncommon around here.

Heck, I had a basic backyard cook out for mine.

But of course there are the fancier ones.

My cousin is in Kennesaw and she had a catered buffet.

A friend from church, who's groom was from Texas, had a 5 course sit down.

????  Dont you have any friends and family?  We easily get 10 invites a year on average.  We don't go to all of them, but in the 25 years since our wedding we've probably been to more than a hundred.  We have four this summer alone.

I am eagerly awaiting an invite to the BF's friend son's wedding. Traditional Chinese. I guess it is like a 20 course meal. Huge costumes, huge display. I think it will be awesome!

Wow!  The last wedding I went to was 5 or so years ago.  And it was about 5 years before that for the one before it.  In my 20s when all my peers & cousins were getting married I went to a lot but not anymore.  Any of my friends who divorced & remarried didn't have big wedding the second time around.

I haven't been to a wedding since my cousin got married 2 years ago.

I really wouldn't mind eloping, but I wouldn't do that to my (our) family. They would be crushed.

ETA: I forgot how long they have been married. Whoops

I think the last wedding I went to was DDs. I've coordinated a few since then, but at my age, there's really not a lot of people getting married.

I think the last one we went to was DS2's.

Now THAT was tacky...but they were just kids themselves.

Ugh Husker you reminded me I have to go to my niece's wedding in September or maybe it's October. I am dreading it. It is an 8 hour drive requiring an overnight stay & probably no booze. I'd rather have a root canal but my family would likely disown me if I don't go.

Last one I attended was my cousin, the one who married the festival carny.

That was an interesting reception.

They had fire jugglers and an acrobat.

That was 7 years ago?

Of course my parents just renewed their vows in March.

It's about time for the next generation to start with the marriages.

I was at a pot luck wedding about 10 years ago and it was FABULOUS! I LOVE pot luck dinners! The hard part for me would be picking what to bring.

I had a lot of cousins but never went to any of their weddings. One reason was age difference, distance and we weren't close. I have several whom I only met once in my lifetime.

Ok speaking of gift grabbing. A lot of people have asked if we're going to register. We both have way to much stuff already and I've expressed that and that the only present we want is their presence. But a couple friends have suggested it might look like we're hinting for money. So what say the peeps. Should we just register somewhere and put cheap gadget items on the list?

It's a little different in a small town. Everyone has some connection to everyone else. It's not as much gift grabby as not wanting to offend someone who thinks they should be included.

I got a lot of pressure to register at my wedding even though I told people we weren't going to.  We finally registered for some items at target just to shut some family members up. I guess I can understand,  I'm not very creative when it comes to gift giving. If I get married again though I'm definitely not,  for one thing I don't need anything this time around

Again, it's a little different. Weddings become a big community party. I personally wouldn't have one like that, and I avoid attending them at all costs. But I've seen it happen quite a bit.

There's a difference between the invited guests and those who just come to the wedding dance.  Not everyone receives a formal invitation.  I'm only talking about the ones I've been formally invited to.

Yes.  Everyone is married, and the children are still in school or starting college.  I'm sure there will be a wave of them in about 10 years when the children start marrying.  But for now, we're all settled.

I wouldn't register, Mary.

I was 40 when I married DH and had been living on my own for years. I had everything I needed, and we were sorting through duplicates when we merged. So, nope, no registry. And no one asked.

I do have a third cousin twice removed who lives nearby and is engaged. I doubt I'd be invited to the wedding unless she gets married out here. I met her last year and we friended each other on FB. Her Papa has the beach house we stay at in California. If I get an invite, I'll let everyone know. It will be my first wedding in probably 16 years besides my own.

Nope, can't say that any of that has happened. But it's been years since I've been to a wedding, an society has changed a lot since then.

????  Dont you have any friends and family?  We easily get 10 invites a year on average.  We don't go to all of them, but in the 25 years since our wedding we've probably been to more than a hundred.  We have four this summer alone.

Yes.  Everyone is married, and the children are still in school or starting college.  I'm sure there will be a wave of them in about 10 years when the children start marrying.  But for now, we're all settled.

Still seems gift grabby to me.

well, it's not.  You don't know any of them.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

I was at a pot luck wedding about 10 years ago and it was FABULOUS! I LOVE pot luck dinners! The hard part for me would be picking what to bring.

I have never heard of such a thing here. I've been to a lot of weddings too.

No would attend a pot luck wedding if it was someone I'm close to but I draw the line at providing my own table, chairs and cutlery 😜

That's the only thing over $100 on my niece's registry.

So now I will be probably "talked" about. RSVP'd that we are attending and just found out that all the 5th grade end of elementary school stuff is happening on the day after the wedding, meaning we can't attend. DD really wants to go to her 5th grade stuff.

Rip me a new one!
