They say life begins at 40, but just how it will feel to one day be 'old' is seemingly a tough thing for children to comprehend.

The thoughts of three kids who wrote about how it must feel to be 40 have gone viral on Twitter, as they detail everything from aching legs, grey hair and wrinkles, to being prepared to die.

Dan Thomas, from the United Kingdom, shared the children's thoughts on social media, which were taken from the book 'Happy Birthday (you poor old wreck)', receiving more than 3,300 retweets and 4,200 likes.

The three children - Rita, Jennifer, and Patrick - are all a long way off reaching their middle years, but like most children their age, had no qualms about expressing their opinions.

Jennifer for one, is clearly not looking forward to reaching 40.

The eight-year-old expresses some rather depressing thoughts about reaching 'old' age.

'I am forty. I am turning old. I just left work because I cannot manage going up and down hills. I know I will soon die,' she said.

Rita, 9, is also not looking forward to what life will be like 31 years in the future.

'I am forty. I have wrinkles and grey hair and I would have a walking stick to help me walk,' she said.

Patrick, 8, also doesn't seem to be excited about growing up and seems to harbour specific concerns about reaching the age of 42.

'Your legs begin to ache and you feel you'll collapse when you are about 42,' he wrote.

Thankfully for the youngsters their low expectations mean that when they do eventually reach their fourth decade, life probably won't be that bad.

Just proves what I always thought. Children do not really have a concept of "age" other than there own age and do not seem to actually have a grasp on what aging is like except for one or two years in the future....

But the article gave me a lot of laughs and made me wonder what they would say about 80? Or if they could even grasp the concept of such an age. LOL

LOL!

DH asked our oldest DGS, when he was six, who was older, DH or Grammy (DH's mother). DGS said, "You, Papa."

DH was totally crushed. LOL

When you are six, everyone over the age of 20 IS old. And, apparently, the same age.

I remember thinking 30 would be ancient.

And when I turned 40 I remember thinking, if the average life span is 80 years, my life was half over.

Now that scared me just a little.

46 now. It shouldn't be old. But I feel old.

This is my favorite:

'I am forty. I am turning old. I just left work because I cannot manage going up and down hills. I know I will soon die,' she said.
