Try reading again. He didn't say people shouldn't watch their kids, only that this mother shouldn't be vilified just because YOU think it could never happen to YOU.

I heard this particular zoo was cited in March for leaving a door open, allowing a polar bear to enter an employee room. Yikes.
I think I heard that as well, but the gorilla exhibit passed an inspection (MM posted the year).
flan
Then it appears the zoo inspectors didn't think a child could get in there, either - and it's their job to know. Somehow, a visitor is supposed to know more than they do.

No, BUT a mother is supposed to WATCH her child.
I read a story that ANOTHER person had to tell the woman that her child was in the enclosure.

And I read the eyewitness account of how quickly it happened. Yes, she should have been watching her kid, and more importantly, a 4 year old should know enough to listen to "no" - but crap still happens because people aren't perfect. It's amazing to me that people will defend a parent that FORGETS a child in a hot car, but a parent who can't keep her eye one child constantly is a villain.
But for the grace of God.....

Or a man who kills his wife and child gets their sympathy but not this mother with 4 kids at a very busy zoo.

p.s. Okay, let's say the child was running loose in Target & knocked down a shelf of glass items. Should the parent pay for the damage?
Police may bring criminal charges over a Cincinnati Zoo incident in which a gorilla was killed to rescue a 4-year-old boy who had fallen into its enclosure, a prosecutor said on Tuesday.
And an interesting comment:
Looking at the incident through Harambe's eyes, his former caretaker, Jerry Stones, said in a CNN interview that the breach of his habitat was likely confusing.
"Here is this animal that has this strange thing in his house," Stones said on CNN. "He knew what adult people were but he'd never been around children. It smells similar, it looks similar but 'What is it? Do I play with it? Am I supposed to be afraid of it? What do I do?'"
flan
They have come out and said they are not bringing charges.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
Is there someone hear disagreeing with that advice flan?
husker, for starters.

You are so full of sh!t it's running out your ears.
I NEVER said that parents should not watch their children. What I've said is that sometimes even the most diligent parents have things happen. Their kids don't always listen, they turn around to pay attention to another child, or order some food, or God forbid, look at one of the zoo exhibits, themselves, and things can happen in a flash.

The story I quoted was dated yesterday. I'll look when I get a chance.

Honestly, the number of conflicting stories seem to be multiplying.
I was discussing this with 2 co-workers this morning. Was the father there or not?
One person insisted that Harambe had already fathered a child. I never ran across that.
The father of the boy has been in and out of prison all his life. He had some felony assault charges among others. Supposedly, he has turned his life around though and is trying to be a good father.

My coworker who is black was talking about this today. She said no way was this a black family because her people don't go in the water, lol. I pulled up photos of the family and she was shocked. We argue about this all the time when I talk about the beach. I told her I am going to take a picture of "her people" playing in the ocean.

You should be in Myrtle Beach during black bike week!
And that has become my absolute favorite time to go, by the way.
So much fun and never had any problems.

No one told me!!!

I tell my black friends that all the time. But we always make jokes and don't get offended.
I just read a story about the mom that said CPS has removed the kids from the home twice before. Apparently the mother told the police that she was taking a selfie at the time the boy climbed in.

People saying they would throw them selves in or ghat mom seemed too calm are not thinking rationally.
If a big scene was made, if a panic started, it could have been deadly for the child.
The best thing a parent can do in an emergency situation is stay calm.
Panic causes panic.
And that never helps.
