Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces.[1] The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May,[2] originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers.[3] By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.
Last night I received the news that my father's cousin, WWII Veteran, passed away. I spent the evening watching the Memorial Day concert on the Mall, thinking of him, weeping. Grateful he made it out here last year as part of the Honor Guard, and I was able to see him one last time.
Now to get ready for our little pool party celebration...

You should honor your Father's cousin at your party. Maybe make him a nice plate of food and set it at the table.

Darius Rucker did a nice job with the National Anthem.
I think it's amazing that a rookie won the 100th running. I knew Rossi didn't pit for fuel, but did not know that he actually ran out of gas on the final lap, and still coasted to the win.

What is the story of the tradition of the winner drinking a bottle of milk when the race is over?

A long-standing tradition of the Indianapolis 500 is for the winner to drink a bottle of milk immediately after the race. This tradition dates back to 1936 after victor Louis Meyer asked for a glass of buttermilk, something his mother had encouraged him to drink on hot days. Meyer also reportedly drank milk after his victory in 1933, as did a few others in the immediate years afterward. The young tradition quickly went away, and for a time after WWII, was replaced by "Water From Wilbur" - a silver jug (resembling an ice bucket) filled with icy-cold water, presented by then-Speedway president, and three-time former winner Wilbur Shaw.
By 1956, the milk returned as a ritual as milk companies became sponsors of the race purse and handed a bottle of milk to the winner to promote their product.[3] A sponsorship of currently $10,000 now paid out by the American Dairy Association if the winner sips the milk in victory lane. In 1993, Emerson Fittipaldi drank orange juice instead of milk after his victory. The snub drew considerable ire from fans. Later he took a sip of milk, at the urging of his car owner Roger Penske. Fittipaldi owned citrus farms in Brazil, and wished to promote his industry. As a result, he was booed in driver's introductions the following week by the crowd in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the heart of "America's Dairyland." In 1981, Bobby Unser also did not drink the milk in victory lane.[40] After Unser was tentatively stripped of his victory, Mario Andretti sipped from a bottle of milk the next morning during the traditional photo shoot.
FNW, your pool party sounds great and I like the idea of honoring your veteran uncle. A tradition in some areas around here is to set up a small table with a place setting, a flower and a small flag. The empty chair and unused place setting is a reminder of the sacrifice made by those who served our country.
We have two of the grandkids, one has been up chucking since about 7 this morning. So, we are going to have a quiet day. After the last three nights of partying, we need the rest. ;)

Faith isn't something that keeps bad things from happening. Faith is what helps us get through bad things when they do happen.

I am at work. Tomorrow is month end close, I have so much to do. I still don't totally have a handle on time management in my new position. I'm sure it will get better, eventually.

I think you should treat yourself to a yummy lunch. Are there places that deliver?
Going to grill some burgers and brats. The kids may go swimming later. Not going to do much.
The police are everywhere.
But you know what? This is the first time, in a long time, there isn't a park full of people and a ball tournament going on.
Only thing making noise are the birds.

Only thing in town that delivers is pizza. We'll see how long I'm here. I've only got a few more hours of must do stuff.
DS is watching Bee Movie and giggling at the appropriate parts. It's one of his favorite movies. Grandma noted that he was laughing at the appropriate parts in Evan Almighty (another favorite of his) when she was here Saturday.
What needs to be done: Finally finish up organizing the apartment. Every time we start or plan a day to get it done, something comes up.
What I want to do: Go out and roam. I don't much feel like adulting today.
What will happen: We will see.

Finished at the office. I still have a spreadsheet I need to build. But I'm going to do that at home. It's going to take a couple hours to get all the info and formulas set up. I can do that from the couch.

Your DS sounds so adorable!
He usually is :) Sometimes, he's quite bratty though.
It's trying to storm. Lots of Thunder and lightening all around us. It's muggy like crazy.

Remember every Memorial Day started with a big parade through town to the cemetary and then a service was held to honor all the fallen. Went every year; when I was old enough to be in marching band, I marched out there. Wonder if towns still do this.....
Perhaps there would be a need to haggle over what kind of service should be held or what order the parade members should be in or is there just a kind of "who cares?" attitude about the whole thing....
You can tell I am not feeling very cheery today...

They still have a parade here Karl. It doesn't go to the cemetery, it ends at the county courthouse where all our war monuments are. They have a couple people speak, play taps and have a 21-gun salute.

What was sad in the Mass area is many towns cancelled their parades today because of the threat of rain. NH did not, at least no near me. I wonder if the organizers or decision makers thought that in war time, soldiers didn't fight or die when it rained. It really made me mad.

Luckily it was a beautiful day here. But I remember in high school marching through all kinds of weather for the Memorial Day and Veteran's Day parades.
The worst was the homecoming parade they had for John Glenn when he went back to space. It was December. I was already sick. And it was freezing cold and sleeting. It was miserable. Then I ended up in another town than my car and lost our exchange student....it was a mess of a day.
Fun day here. The weather was perfect. Clouds, warm but not too hot, sun peeking out every now and then. Pool temps at 85 which was quite pleasant. Good food, good drinks. S'mores for dessert with a s'more's burner we got for Christmas. My first s'more. I can't believe I never had one before. It was delicious! We talked about Ford, and reminisced about the fun we had with him. A huge golden hawk appeared for the first time and hung out in our trees, watching. I am taking it as a sign that he's still with us, watching us have fun.

That is amazing, don't you think?

I think it is great how the school's marching bands were, always ready for a parade no matter the weather. More times than not, you had to be so dehydrated from the heat. I love marching bands, they really make the parade and are always followed up by the cars with the vets and dignitaries.

I know there was a dance on Saturday night in Ringgold in honor of Memorial day.

I finished my spreadsheet. I have it all set that my coworker has to input 1 number (current index price) and all the other calculations update and the the prices are all ready to copy into the body of an email to the customers. Took me 2 hours to do, but it will save her at least that each month.
And it will save me having to hear her complain about figuring the prices lol

Stunning and I am surprised you had the presence of mind to take a couple of pictures. (I probably would not have). It does make you wonder, though, about people having a chance now and then to stop by and check up on their loved ones.....
I know that Memorial Day is over, but since I didn't stop in yesterday evening, I just wanted to say I hope everyone had a good and safe holiday.
I'd also like to thank anyone that served for their service, as well as thanking anyone who has lost a loved one for their loved one's service and sacrifice.
