Molly Ivins began her journalism career at the Minneapolis Tribune where she became the first female police reporter at the paper. Ivins joined the Texas Observer in the early 1970s and later moved to The New York Times. She became a columnist for the Dallas Times Herald in the 1980s, and then the Fort Worth Star-Telegram after the Times Herald was sold and shuttered. The column was subsequently syndicated by Creators Syndicate and carried by hundreds of newspapers.

Ivins wrote for the Dallas Times Herald for ten years and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize twice.

You're totally right husker...sounds just like one of the K-K-Kardashian Klan.

In China where gun ownership is not allowed, deadly mass knife attacks are common.  Banning guns would not stop killers.  And for someone who swears up and down she's not arguing to take people's guns away, she sure does argue against guns a  lot.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/01/world/asia/china-railway-attack/

And more just from 2010 -

The Truth Is That Mass Killings Happen In China Using Knives.

Here’s a partial list off mass killings at schools in China (source).

On March 23, 2010, Zheng Minsheng, murdered eight children with a knife in an elementary school in Nanping,Fujian province in China.

Later that year (after Zhen Minsheng was executed) in neighboring Fujian Province, in Leizhou, Guangdong knife-wielding Chen Kangbing, at Hongfu Primary School wounded 16 students and a teacher.

On April 29, 2010 in Taixing,Jiangsu, unemployed Xu Yuyuan went to Zhongxin Kindergarten and stabbed 28 students and two teachers after stabbing the security guard; most of the Taixing students were 4 years old.

On April 30, 2010 Wang Yonglai used a hammer to cause head injury to preschool children in Weifang, Shandong, then used gasoline to commit suicide by self-immolation.

(Oh wait, we’re only comparing knives to guns here — sorry about that — but I guess a sick psycho bashing in the heads of preschool children in China is not something that any left-wing democrat wants to address — the fact that murder is murder regardless of the weapon(s) used)

An attacker named Wu Huanming killed seven children and two adults and injured 11 other persons with a cleaver at a kindergarten in Hanzhong, Shaanxi on May 12, 2010.

On May 18, 2010 at Hainan Institute of Science and Technology, in Haikou, Hainan, more than 10 men charged into a dormitory wielding knives around 2:30 am; after attacking the security guard and disabling security cameras, 9 students were injured, 1 seriously.

On 4 August 2010, Fang Jiantang slashed more than 20 children and staff with a 60 cm knife, killing 3 children and 1 teacher, at a kindergarten in Zibo, Shandong province.

That was all in just one year, 2010. A total of 27 people had died and at least 80 were injured in various knife attacks.

Knives Have Killed More People In A Single Mass Murder Than A Single Mass Murder With Any Type of Gun

The Virginia Tech shooting (also known as the Virginia Tech massacre) occurred on April 16, 2007, on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Seung-Hui Cho, shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others in two separate attacks, approximately two hours apart, before committing suicide.

The Virginia Tech attack is the deadliest mass shooting incident in American history.

(It’s also worth noting that the so-called, “evil assault rifles” or “weapons of war” that Obama hates so much–your standard semi-automatic modern sporting rifle like an AR-15 or AK-47–were not even used at Virginia Tech. The killer used handguns.)

In October 2015 in Xinjiang China, 50 people were murdered (with as many as an additional 50 people injured) by knife-wielding men at a coal mine.

That’s 18 MORE people killed using a knife vs a gun in one single mass murder event.

On July 28, 2014 in the same region in China, a mass knife attack killed almost 100 people (according to the Chinese government) as well.

That could be as much as 68 MORE people killed using a knife vs a gun in a single mass murder event (assuming the 100 person death toll is accurate, it’s hard to find a good source about this attack on exact numbers).

Granted, as far as I know, those two attacks were committed by multiple people armed with knives vs just one lone killer armed with a gun as in the Virginia Tech killing spree.

As John Lott from the Crime Prevention Research Center notes,

“… Guns obviously make it easier for people to kill others, though they also make it easier for people to defend themselves. Still the harm that can be caused from knife attacks within a very short period of time, even by someone who doesn’t know what they are doing, can be seen by looking at some cases of multiple victim knife attacks from China”

Which I think is an important point.

If you want to argue that it’s easier to kill others with a gun than a knife … then by that very same logic … you must also agree that it’s much easier to defend yourself using a gun vs a knife.

So if you care at all about people protecting themselves from homicidal maniacs — who as we’ve seen still exist in China despite there being an epic level of gun control — then you would want more people to have access to guns.

Make No Mistake: Knives Still Kill a LOT of People in America Too …

I’ve had this discussion with someone before over dinner–I didn’t start it–and he swore up and down that his “green beret buddy” told him that it’s super hard to kill people with knives.

This is so absurd it’s not even funny.

It takes just as little skill to kill someone with a knife as it does with a gun …

In 2014, at Franklin Regional High School in Pennsylvania, a single, very small 16-year old kid (who witnesses said “looks like he’s 10″) was able to wound at least 24 people in just 5 minutes using a knife.

And comparing the number of murders by knife to the number of murders by what Obama calls “powerful weapons” — in other words, AR-15’s and the like — makes this even more obvious.

The truth is that ANY type of crime by semi-automatic rifles is extremely rare in the United States …

Obama would love to have all guns banned, but he mainly wants to ban AR-15’s and AK-47’s and other semi-automatic Modern Sporting Rifles — which he calls “assault rifles” or “weapons of war”.

As I’ve written before, the actual number of deaths by rifles — of any type, not just so-called “assualt rifles” (another propaganda word) — is so low it’s laughable that it’s a political issue at all.

In short, about FIVE times more people are murdered with knives than any type of rifle.

Seriously?  China is a country with massive gun control.  It is a pure example of the fact that mass murders don't stop because of gun control.  The only thing gun control does is take weapons from law-abiding people.  If people want to kill others, they will do it by other means.  Guns are TOOLS - they require people to be used.

It also shows the statement that mass murders don't happen with knives to be patently false.

In America, which weapon is most often used in mass murders?

The CULTURE of the citizens plays a big part in the issue.

And if you take away guns, the criminals will still have them, and those that don't will just use bombs or knives.  And bombs would be much worse.

She had a lot of quotes floating around the internet, she was an interesting person that is for sure.

Ivins made a living poking fun at politicians, whether they were in her home state of Texas or the White House. She revealed in early 2006 that she was being treated for breast cancer for the third time.

More than 400 newspapers subscribed to her nationally syndicated column, which combined strong liberal views and populist humor. Ivins’ illness did not appear to hurt her ability to deliver biting one-liners.
