U.S. Navy Blue Angels jet crashes

This is less than a mile from DD's house...

 

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) – A U.S. Navy Blue Angels jet crashed Thursday afternoon in Smyrna ahead of their weekend air show at the city’s airport.

The La Vergne fire chief confirmed the accident happened around 3 p.m. near Weakly Lane, not far from the bowling alley.

LifeFlight helicopters from Vanderbilt University Medical Center were called to the scene.

Further details have yet to be released.

The Blue Angels are set to perform at the Great Tennessee Airshow this Saturday and Sunday. It’s unclear if the crash will affect the show.

Just talked to my ExH. He works literally 100 yards away from where it crashed. They were all outside watching the practice. They saw it happen. He says they never saw a parachute. :(

One crashed here several years ago during a show. The pilot was killed. It was about 6 miles from my house.

The pilot has died...:(
They say he didnt eject because he was in a residential area and would not have had control of the plane had he done so. He stayed with the plane to minimize the casualties. This is theory of course, but that was what he was trained to do...

My ExH videoed the whole thing. He did not post the video, but a screen shot. (For all his faults, he is better than that). Naval Officers came to his house about an hour ago and asked to see the video. He forwarded it to them, then deleted it. They were impressed by his willingness not to post the video and to delete it. If it gets out (it won't, I know this) they know where he is. He's still really shaken up about it...

 No family member should have to see video on media of their loved one dying.  Good for the ex.

That officer sacrificed his own life for others. A true man of honor.

I will say a prayer for his family.

Colorado Springs Air Force Academy had a jet crash this afternoon as well. That pilot did survive. It happened shortly after he was part of the air show for the graduating class that Obama had finished speaking at minutes before the crash.

 The Tbird pilot at the graduation grew up not far from me.  So thankful he is fine.  

 

And that Blue Angels pilot is a man of honor.  I appreciate his life and feel so sad for his family.

Is this near Murfreesboro? My sociopath friend lived there for a few years with his wife and daughters....he was taking anesthetist classes at Vanderbuilt and his wife was a nurse anesthetist somewhere around there.

Yep.  It's the town directly north of Murfreesboro.  Both towns are in the same county...

Yep.  It's the town directly north of Murfreesboro.  Both towns are in the same county... 

 When I was a child, we went to Pompano Beach every summer. Dad always did the drive in 3 days: the first night we stopped in Murfreesboro, the second in Valdosta.
