DEAR HARRIETTE: I had a friend pick up a prescription for me, and I suspect she peeked into the bag the medicine came in. I assumed it was basic etiquette to not open something so private. I have some heart issues that I don't share with others, but I feel like she has to know because she always asks if I'm all right, especially when I'm out of breath. I don't need her help, and I thought this medicine would never be spoken about again after I thanked her. It was one day that I was in a bind, and she offered to help me out. Could she have offered to pick up my prescription just to snoop and find out what medications I'm taking? I'd like to educate her on how to properly handle situations like this because I completely regret trusting her to not look at what medicine I take. -- Private Pills, Annapolis, Maryland
DEAR PRIVATE PILLS: You can't go backward in time. The next time she pries about your health, tell your friend that you regret having asked her to pick up your medicine because you believe she violated confidentiality by looking at your medicine. Tell her that you are not interested in discussing your health with her. Leave it at that.
If your condition is something that could cause real problems, you should consider having someone as a confidant in case you have an emergency.
I don't think she should do anything because she has absolutely no proof that the friend snooped. Say thank you and don't ask her again if you don't trust her.

When u pick up a prescription it says on it what it is. So pick up your own prescriptions or get them mailed. Sheesh. Her friend did her a favor and she wants to kvetch.
This goes under the category of trying to find something to complain about. Can't be a good friend if she worries her friend might find out what medication she takes.

You also can't pick up meds at a pharmacy without the pharmacist showing you the meds, confirming the does, colour of pills and various other information. It's not snooping, it's how pharmacy works.
I would like to snoop through my SIL's medicine cabinet and see what she's on. She's a different person every time I see her so I'm convinced she's bipolar. Or she's just a beotch. If she's bipolar, I might be a little more understanding and give her a break. That's the only reason I would like to know.

If she's bipolar and takes her medications than you wouldn't even notice that anything is different. It's the ones who AREN'T on anything that you have to watch out for :p

My pharmacy doesn't do this. They ask my name and date of birth, then will say how many prescriptions they have to be picked up. They don't say anything about the medication except asking if you have any questions for the pharmacist
Around here prescriptions come with a label on the outside of the bag which states exactly what the medicine is and what it is for.
Use the delivery service if you're so concerned about people finding out what meds you take.

When I pick up my prescription, the bag is stapled shut, but the info is on the outside. The only thing the pharmacy tech asks is if I have any questions.
This same lady is probably blabbing at the grocery store and the hair dresser and everywhere else about all of health problems in great detail to anyone who will listen!

Oh I know someone that does that. He admitted to me that when he goes to peoples houses, he snoops in the medicine cabinet.
I was toying with the idea of filling my medicine cabinet up with marbles the next time he comes to visit. :)

They did a study - more people snoop than don't.

I don't think about medicine cabinets, but that chest freezer in the corner of the dimly lit basement.....

My pharmacy doesn't do that either. I drive up to the window, give them my name and birthdate (what you said). Then I am on my way! They are already in a bottle in a sealed paper bag with all of the info stapled to the outside.

My pharmacy doesn't, either, but they recognize me. I drive up, they see me, they give me my prescription, I drive away.
