DEAR MISS MANNERS: When I attended a concert by a very famous singer, everyone was very excited, and as the artist took the stage, the audience rose, cheering and applauding.
Usually by the second song, the audience settles down and takes their seats, but not this particular crowd. By the fourth song, just about everyone was still standing. Shouts of "Down in front!" started coming from the patrons in the rows behind my friend and me, and we immediately sat down.
Problem was, everyone in front of us remained on their feet. We sat for a bit, and then because we couldn't see anything, we rose again, angering the people directly behind me, who started hurling insults and expletives.
I turned around and explained that I couldn't see anything because everyone else remained standing. When I turned back toward the stage, someone behind me called me a fat pig and slapped the back of my head.
I threatened to have them arrested, but I did sit down. My friend, now out of spite, remained standing until everyone in front of us finally settled down when the artist finally did a slow song.
How could I have handled this better?
GENTLE READER: Having not responded to the threat of arrest, the people behind you demonstrated that they were immune to reason. This may be why they did not notice your problem with the people in front of you.
Miss Manners suggests gesturing toward those who are standing and blocking your view, and then getting out of the way and looking out for some official who might intervene, if not arrest them, if things turn more violent.
People stand at concerts. And, for some of them, people stand the entire time. It is just the way it is. Wanna see? Then stand up too. Or, pay more money and get front row tickets.
If someone slapped me, i would not only stand in front of them, i would sit on my friend's shoulders for the rest of the concert. What are ya gonna do about it PUNK!

Seriously. People stand at most concerts I go to. I mean, who can sit when Lynyrd Skynyrd is jamming?????

She should have had them arrested. You never put your hands on someone.
And you can see if the people two rows ahead of you are also standing at most venues.
That's crazy.
We sat in the front row (second tier) at a Billy Joel concert. For the most part we stayed seated, because there was no one in front of us. Next to me were a couple of young guys who were a little tipsy and wild. When they started to crowd my personal space, I gently nudged them back. They tried to give me money for disturbing me, but I wouldn't take it. They explained that they just came home from serving in Afghanistan and were happy to be back in the U.S. I thanked them for the service, shook their hands, and was glad to see them home and having a good time.
Generally by the fourth song, things are being passed around and everyone is having a grand ol time.

I've been to a lot of different types of concerts. From gospel to death metal.
In venues from church to arena.
And it really depends on where you at in the audience.

They weren't going to allow me to take my purse into the Taylor Swift concert. They stood outside with an 8 x 11 piece of paper and said you were not allowed to have a purse bigger than that. Why? Who the heck knows? Anyway, i pretended to throw it away, then i stuffed my purse under my shirt and went in. ANd, when i was in there, there were women with bigger purses than me. Just more "Rules for the sake of rules" that someone decided on that have no point.

I know. They dont want you to smuggle stuff in. But , they used to just search and look into your purse. I am fine with that. But, a gal has to have her purse!
Just search my purse. What is the big deal? That is what they always used to do. And, my purse is fairly small. It was only slightly bigger than that piece of paper. I don't carry a big ass purse that is the size of a diaper bag, lol.

Then they'd better sell it. A concert without booze is like a wedding without it.
That depends on where you are. I go to plenty of concerts that allow smoking indoors...
Really? There is a state law against it in most places. No smoking indoors. Anywhere.
Hmmm...You must not have been South lately. In KY, you can smoke anywhere you want, restaurants, concert halls, even places like NAPA and Auto Zone have ashtrays on the counters...
And there are plenty of places in TN you can smoke too. All bars, several restaurants...
Also, most concert venues G plays at allows smoking...

Actually I have been in the south recently. The places I was at didn't allow smoking indoors.

As of January 2014, 10 states have not enacted any general statewide ban on smoking in any non-government-owned spaces: Alabama, Alaska, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Instead, laws in most of these states (see individual state listings below for further information) require proprietors of certain places to designate smoking and non-smoking areas and post warning signage.
In Oklahoma, state law prohibits local governments from regulating smoking more strictly than the state, making it the only state without any kind of legislated smoking bans. In the other nine states, cities and/or counties have enacted stricter smoking laws than the state, in some cases banning smoking in all enclosed workplaces. In Alabama and Mississippi, the state smoking law expressly allows all local governments to do so. In Alaska, Kentucky, Missouri, South Carolina, Texas, and West Virginia, a court has ruled that certain local governments have the power to do so.

So 10 states out of 50 don't prohibit it. That's amazing to me. Previous to the ban we would have to get up and leave restaurants or ask to switch tables if there was a smoker nearby. The ban has made things much easier.

If it is a rock concert, then i expect people stand. If it is a play or show, then i expect people to sit.
I don't know.
Ozzy, Motley Crue, Sepultra, Type O Negative, Poison, Warrant, Rat, all of them, we sat during parts, stoo during others.

I never took anything in but my keys and money.

Yeah if someone touched me like that it would probably override everything my medications do for me! I would hit back, and probably get my butt beat because I am tiny but I don't care

Are you amazed because you think that's a low number or a high number? I cant quite tell....

Ok, well yes they sell merchandise. And, they give people these huge bags for one tshirt. So, you could easily fill that bag full of stolen things.

I think it's amazing that there are 10 states without a ban. Too many. I am currently at another seminar and it's on a college campus. The entire campus is tobacco free. If you want to smoke, even vape, you need to leave campus entirely.

TEN states that don't ban smoking? The effects of second-hand smoke could not be any clearer.

Typical liberal response. It's all about controlling the masses. The state should not be dictating where people can smoke. That should be up to the people.
But liberals are all about suppressing freedom...

I completely disagree. Smoking affects those around you.

Then don't patronize places that allow smoking. That's the way it's done in KY...
