It's not "fear". It's just commonsense. Do you lock your door at night? Why ? Does that mean you live in 'fear"? Are you living in fear if you lock your car? Are you living in fear if you go to the doctor to get a physical? You seem to have some need to believe that people who own guns are cowering in fear and nothing could be further from the truth.

I live in an active coyote area. You can hear them in the woods across from my house celebrating kills and talking.

There are bears spotted rather frequently around here, too. Not that a 9mm will stop a bear, but it might buy me time to get in the house.

I live across from a park. People out there at all hours of the night. Why would anyone be walking paths through the woods at 3 in the morning?

And houses on two sides of me have been broken into.

When I was working, there were lots of nights I would leave work with several thousand dollars for a bank drop.

There are all kinds of reasons to carry.

And none of it is fear.

It's being prepared.

Saying that it isn't the norm here (Canada), is not attacking Americans, its just saying that we do things differently.

I know that the Americans I know who have guns, some have them beside them as they sleep even, admit it is because they fear harm to themselves or their loved ones. Fear is the reason people buy guns, to protect themselves.
Why do some of you find that offensive to say or admit? I don't get that part.....
