ISIS claims responsibility for the Orlando gay nightclub shooting. But that doesn't mean they knew anything about it.

As yet, there appears no evidence that the gunman underwent serious Islamist indoctrination - but Isis is the great beneficiary of the publicity.

By Monday morning Al-Bayan, the Isis radio station, was declaring that Omar Mateen, an American of Afghan background, was “one of the Caliphate’s soldiers in America who carried out a security invasion where he was able to enter a crusader gathering at a nightclub for homosexuals….”. Many Islamist supporters changed their profile pictures on Twitter to that of the killer. Screenshots were shared of the scene of the attack. Praise was heaped on yet another great victory by Isis. A call by the group to carry out attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan was repeated.

The shooter called 911 from the club claiming ISIS affiliation. His father is also a known Islamic radical that has been on FBI lists.

Mateen was also known to be mentally unstable and abusive to his wife. Was he in some ways a Dylann Roof – the Charleston shooter – but with Afghan ancestry to go along with his bigotry and violence?

Channels on the encrypted messaging app Telegram, which ISIS uses to send out information to supporters, asked followers to post canned messages celebrating the attacks and threatening more violence.

With the Orlando attack, there was no similar campaign.

So why should we be careful about how we describes and think about the attack? For media outlets – all scrambling to make sense of the tragedy — calling it an ISIS production doesn’t just play into fear-mongering. It does exactly what the Islamic State wants: It testifies to the group’s omnipotence.

“I think what the Islamic State has done is very clever, and that is create a situation where someone can carry out an attack without any direct link to the organization,” Charlie Winter, senior research associate at Georgia State University’s Transcultural Conflict and Violence Initiative, told the New York Times. “They can pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi before or during, and that catapults them from being a self-starter jihadist guy, or girl, to someone who can be lionized as a soldier of the Islamic State and regarded as a warrior.”

If the media doesn’t want to play into the hands of a terrorist group, they’ll be careful with this.

Whether he was a card toting member of ISIS or not, he did this in their name. He did this knowing that's what they want. They are saying that he did exactly what a good ISIS soldier would do. He was following their agenda.

Every country has mentally ill people. Every country has little losermen who are angry and want to beat their wife, lash out at their boss, kick their dog. The difference is that the US allows people to own machine guns that can spray hundreds of bullets a minute. Banning these for private use and confiscating every one of them would be a great start. The current loserman killer bought his gun this week, legally. (The GOP has made it impossible to even ban purchase by people on the terror watch list)

It isn't complicated. Making it impossible for these jerks to be armed with weapons capable of such carnage would have made Sandy Hook and Orlando both highly unlikely. Even with hand guns and rifles available, today's weenie would have been able to kill a few, not 50.

Assault weapons were once banned. Now with the pressure of the NRA the media calls the damn things 'long guns' rather than assault rifles and the Congress has made their ownership legal again. There is no justification of allowing civilian ownership of weapons designed for mass murder.
