It will possibly keep those with a serious mental illness from purchasing guns, chef.
How long of a waiting period, if any, do you support? Any background checks?
flan
There is a law about the mentally ill not being able to purchase weapons. Problem is not all mentally ill have a diagnosis because they don't go to the doctor and our laws don't mandate that an obvious crazy person go to a doctor even if the family members BEG the police and such to get the people help. And you know why???? Because the bleeding heart liberals say that protecting an individuals' rights even when mentally ill trumps the safety of the public.

You answer your own questions, first.

I was speaking to chef. Butt out.
flan
And I'm talking to you, Flan.
What are your answers?

Background checks, with today's technology, shouldn't take long at all.
A day at the most.
I don't support waiting periods.

I agree that the mentally ill shouldn't have guns but instead of focusing on banning guns we (the government and state government) should focus more on how to get the mentally ill the help they need. There are slim resources for the mentally ill and that is where the Obama administration
should be focused on.
The problems we have are a moral one not a gun one. I'm not going to go out and shoot anybody or rob a bank. I live in a rural area where if I needed the police it would take 45 mins for them to respond. I have a right to defend myself and my family. I'm alone alot. Criminals don't obey the laws and will find ways of obtaining weapons from other crooks on the black market just like they can buy drugs.

I didn't ask about people with mental illness. I asked about criminals.
I think a week waiting period for most guns would suffice. During that week, background checks and other evaluations could be done.
Obviously no one has an answer to that question.
And, on another thread, many posters thought that SEVEN minutes was long enough to have to "wait" to buy a gun. That's frightening to me.
flan
Then they ought not advocate for more gun control seeing as how it doesn't work. Criminals will always get guns somehow, some way. It's ridiculous to disarm the citizenry and turn them into sitting ducks.
I must've not seen the thread of which you're speaking.
And, ONCE AGAIN, show me where I advocated taking away your guns.

If you support policies and laws that remove guns from people you are taking away your guns. If they outlaw concealed carry everywhere, then how am I or anyone else supposed to exercise our 2nd amendment right?
"Shooting people is bad. STOP THAT RIGHT NOW, Chicago!!!"
Everything would magically be better?
Why don't you aim your ire at the Governor and/or Mayor involved?

Which is the whole point to the argument against gun control. The only people you will stop from having guns are the good guys. The bad guys will still have them. But, everyone will then be defenseless.
