LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Rescue crews are searching through the night to find a two-year-old boy pulled into the water by an alligator. The boy and his family were relaxing along a sandy beach area at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort in Orlando around 9 p.m. when the incident happened.
Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said the boy was about a foot into the water when his father spotted the alligator. The lake is called Seven Seas Lagoon, and flows into Bay Lake.
“The father entered the water, and he tried to grab the child, and was not successful in doing so. At some point I’m told the mother may have entered the water. So the parents diligently tried to get the child,” Sheriff Demings said. “They alerted a nearby lifeguard there in the area as well. But they were unsuccessful in their efforts.”
The family was vacationing in Orlando from Nebraska. They also have a 4-year-old girl who is uninjured.
Witnesses told authorities the alligator is between four and seven feet long.
An alligator trapper is currently searching for the animal. Crews are searching by air and on the water, and are using sonar technology. Dive teams are standing by. The sheriff said everyone is holding out hope and are working hard to find the boy alive. But at this point, the child has not been found.
The resort's response: "We have 'No Swimming' signs posted."
flan
Ummm, no. The Sheriff said that -
here are "No Swimming" signs at the lagoon and no one else was in the water at the time of the attack besides the child, Demings said.
This body of water is not for recreational swimming "likely for that very reason," the reason being alligators.
"This is Florida and it's not uncommon for alligators to be in bodies of water," he said.
Declan Salcido, who's on vacation with relatives from San Jose, California, was coming back from the animal kingdom when the first ambulance arrived just after 9:15 p.m. ET.
He said there are many "No Swimming" signs near the lagoon visible "from any vantage point."
The resort's response:
"Everyone here at the Walt Disney Resort is devastated by this tragic accident," said Jacquee Wahler, the vice president of the Walt Disney World Resort .
"Our thoughts are with the family. We are helping the family and doing everything we can to assist law enforcement."

In any case, the child is dead. I'm not in the mood to play "Who is right?"

Really - that's why your first response was to make a wrong, snarky comment about the resort's response? You think that helps the situation? You think the people who were there and are seeing this happen, and looking for the boy are not more upset than you?
I can't imagine how horrible it must have been for his parents and everyone on the beach, and how horrible it still is, knowing they are not going to find that child alive. And yet you still have to be nasty about it.

It would be helpful if you could stop being nasty about everything - then I wouldn't have anything to lecture you about.
Right now - my thoughts and prayers are with everyone there, mostly the family of that boy. My thoughts are not with a knee jerk reaction of finding someone to blame.

But, in the real world, the owners of the hotel are likely facing a lawsuit as well as loss of revenue.
I cannot imagine what those parents are going through right now.

Doubtful. It's a lake in Florida, alligators are natural to it. There are no swimming signs all over the place and the kid was playing in the water while his parents were letting him.
That is called contributory negligence. They could sue, but are unlikely to win much, if anything.

Flan is right. This obviously isn't going to end well. As for wading in a lake, who hasnt' done that? Yeah, it might say "no swimming" but most people don't view wading in a few feet as "swimming". And, if they are from Nebraska they probably didn't appreciate the danger of alligators. It is a horrible tragedy for sure.

Thank you.
They likely saved & planned for a visit to Disney world...and then the unthinkable happened.
It's a tragedy, for sure. But the hotels fault? Nope. It's Florida. There are gators anywhere there is water. But my guess is they will settle before it would go to court, if they were to be sued.
Sad for sure. I just can't imagine the horror the family is going through.
Its too bad this poor baby had to suffer because of his parents' stupidity. What a shame. If the signs say no swimming, yes, that means wading too. And alligators are more likely to come into shallow water around dusk. It was a perfect storm of stupid.

And considering the story that made the news a few weeks ago, about the alligator strolling around the golf course...
Alligators tend to hide near the shallows for opportunities such as this. My heart aches for this baby and his family however all those sandy beach areas are fenced in and it's clear it's not for swimming. It's like a canal and boats are always in there.
I don't know what the parents were thinking. I imagine they're torturing themselves over this. I'm sure they will sue though I don't think it would really be fair.
Poor little boy ☹️
And if you want to get in the water at 9:20pm there are so many pools available at Disney. Pick one. But a freshwater lake with "no swimming" signs posted is not the place to wade.

And good gracious! Why were a 2 year old and a 4 year old at the beach at 9pm??!

I read that they were showing a movie on the beach. Being on vacation sometimes parents allow kids to be up later

There are a lot of outdoor activities for families in the Disney resorts. Movies by the pool, fireworks, etc. We engaged in "night time swimming" with the boys who were usually in bed by 8 PM. It was a real treat for them to be up late, enjoying vacation. I do not judge them for being up, but I do for wading in a lake in FL.
One of the reports said it was at the beach area at the resort. And mom ran to get the lifeguard. So it was at a designated beach area with a lifeguard near by. Doesn't exactly sound like the parents climbed barriers into the gorilla cage.
Some fish and wildlife guy was saying it was unusual behavior for a gator in such a populated area with all the activity. Act of nature or God. Unfortunately we have no control.
How incredibly sad. I don't know how a parent would begin to process this.
That child, most likely, wont be found.
And 9 pm in Florida is what, 6pm in Nebraska?
This sounds like a terrible tragedy.

Also - the boy was walking in the water when it happened.
ORLANDO — After 15 hours of searching a man-made lake at a Disney World resort hotel for a toddler snatched off the beach by an alligator,
*sigh*
Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said the boy was about a foot into the water when his father spotted the alligator. The lake is called Seven Seas Lagoon, and flows into Bay Lake.

ORLANDO, Fla., June 15 (Reuters) - Authorities searched for the body of a 2-year-old boy on Wednesday after the toddler was dragged into a lagoon by an alligator in front of his family during a vacation at Walt Disney World resort in Florida.
The boy was snatched as he played at the water's edge on Tuesday night, despite his parents' effort to save him, by an alligator believed to be between 4 and 7 feet (1.2 and 2 meters) long.
Alligators will get into pools. Under houses. Heck, in houses if the door is open.
It's Florida.
They're as common as tourists.

Well, the sheriff and witnesses say he was in about a foot of water...

Oh, I know that lake. It's in front of the Magic Kingdom. I don't remember there being a "beach" per se, where one usually associates as being a place to play in sand, cool off in the water, etc. But I only saw the side that borders the Magic Kingdom.
I do remember they had a boat, similar to a ferryboat in appearance, that you could ride.
You do realize that an alligator is just as agile and almost as fast on dry land.
The boy was wading. Ankle deep on a toddler isn't very deep.
But then again, does it matter?
A 2 yr old is dead due to a natural predator in a terrible turn of events.

Because the Grand Floridian beach is a great place to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks.

The sheriff and the witnesses saidhe and his mother were both in the water about a foot, playing. Not some reporter that wasn't there.

True!
There is also the lighted boat parade after.

Yeah - I've ridden the ferry and the commuter boats to the hotel. They always tell you not to put your hands or feet in the water.
The child was dragged underwater in the Seven Seas Lagoon, witnesses told authorities. The lagoon is connected to a series of canals that feed into large bodies of water, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Executive Director Nick Wiley.
