If I watched my child get dragged off by an alligator, I don't think I would be able to function for the rest of my life. I mean seriously, how would a parent come back from that? No amount of therapy in the world.

The only thing that I can come up with is that you TRY to concentrate on the other child.

That being said, I buried a husband. I cannot fathom having to bury a child.

Update from The Orlando Sentinel:

"There is no question the family will lose a 2-year-old boy," he said Wednesday.

What initially began as a search-and-rescue mission is now an effort to find the child's body so the parents get some closure, Demings said.

Crews won't stop searching until they find the boy, he said, adding that he hopes it's today.

Teams searching for the toddler found five gators, but no sign of the child. The alligators were killed and are undergoing examinations.

They can keep looking, but it's doubtful they will find a body. Those poor parents are not going to get that closure.

And the only thing that will pull the parents through this is the need of the remaining child. Although, many parents that lose a child end up divorcing.

I was thinking the same thing.  They can kill every alligator in those waters, but I do not think they are going to find anything...

I guess they found five and have killed each one and are going to conducts tests. Which I suspect is a PC way of saying open up their stomachs.

The search for the two-year-old boy who was snatched by an alligator at a Walt Disney World resort Tuesday night has been called off
Eighteen hours after the tragic attack, police located the boy's body out of the Seven Seas Lagoon
The discovery comes after a lifeguard told Daily Mail Online that the toddler was actually ten feet from the shore and not just at the water's edge as previously reported
The boy's father tried to wrestle him away from the gator but was not successful
More than 50 people worked overnight and nearly all day Wednesday before they found the boy's body

And call me stupid if you want, but until this story broke, I had no idea how much of a problem alligators are down there. I haven't seen the signs posted but if all they said was no swimming- I don't know that I would consider walking through the surf off limits.

I know there are alligator problems in FL. I just assumed Disney had somehow cleared them off their property since they have so many people visiting. I just naively don't associate gators with Disney.

So the lagoon must have been really shallow near the edge?

It seems like it.  From the pictures Lily posted, I would assume so...

And I agree with whoever said that no swimming doesn't mean no wading.

This is just horrible all the way around.  No parent should ever see their child being killed.

Lily's last picture shows a boat wet docked about 10 feet from the shoreline. Very shallow...

When we stayed in the cabins, we were warned about the wildlife in that area and the possibility of coming across gators and snakes.

The Disney resort is built in the middle of a swamp.

It's a protected nature reserve.

Posters on other boards are saying that Disney's signs are clearly marked not to enter the water at all and have explicit alligator warnings, so I don't know.

That would make more sense if alligators are a problem.

Yes, and they cannot get rid of the gators, even if they did, others would take their place.  It would be as though someone came and took the coyotes out of the woods in my house, they would just be replaced.

Have you ever been to a pool during "pool check?" Even if you stick a foot into the water, the lifeguards are yelling at you to get out. At least all the lifeguards in all the pools I have ever been in did. Swimming doesn't mean head under water, it means being in the water.

We are always allowed to sit on the side with our feet in. We line up around the perimeter of the pool...

I've always been allowed to go in, but not the children. But I would just go in to my neck and sit for a bit then get out. I didn't swim.

It's not a pool it's a lake.  Sticking your toe in isnt swimming.

I'm probably going to get flamed on facebook. They were making jokes like "wonder if he taste liked chicken" all sad about the alligators losing their lives because of stupid father and blah, blah, blah.... I never post anything argumentive (sp) on facebook but I couldn't help myself. My DIL and I both cried when we heard about what happened and my heart still hurts. I've seen people on news post on facebook making Trump political jokes about this. furious   I can't believe some people.

 Depends.

On our last trip to Kauai, there were heavy surf warnings, up the north shore beyond Hanalei. At one beach, I stuck my toe in the water & the lifeguard blew his whistle at me.

DH laughed like a loon...

flan

p.s. And, our neighborhood pool is the same during a pool check. No body parts in the water.

I have never been at a pool with lifeguards that allowed this. Not a toe is allowed in the water. They are very very strict. So to me and my family no swimming means not even a toe in the water.

Regardless, dusk till dark is the most dangerous time for alligators. And shallow water is where they feed. Again, this was a perfect storm of stupid. I feel horrible for the boy. But his parents were idiots. There were posted signs.

Who is heaping scorn?  Is this directed at my comment?  Why is it that you have to jump on every one of my posts with passive aggressive comments of things that you're making up?

It's not scorn. I just struggle to empathize with people who take chances with their children's safety. I know people who have children who are sick with deadly diseases or whose children have chronic conditions and think that the people who play fast and loose with the rules and endanger their children just don't know how good they had it until the tragedy happened. What some people would give to have healthy children and those who do don't take care of them. It's a shame.

Who cares? They were on vacation. There is nothing wrong with letting their two year old stay up until 9.  I know plenty of people whose toddlers regular bedtimes are later than that. Just because someone else doesn't agree with it doesn't make it wrong.

Eta I want to apologize for how snarky this sounds. I am not saying who cares to your comment but to kids staying up until 9.

I only have two things to say.

I feel so badly for this family. This is a tragic and traumatic thing that happened. I can't imagine the pain this has caused for them.

Florida is absolutely crawling with alligators. Anyone who visits should educate themselves about gator habits and how to be safe in Florida. Hopefully tragedies like this will be avoided in the future.

I agree with everything you said.  And we don't even live in Florida Tang and yet gators have shown up on golf courses here.  When I drive to Houston there is all kinds of swampland and it is posted everywhere about gators.

I woder if the 4 yr old witnessed this as well.

Look, the exact same beach they were on splashing in the water is the exact same beach they swim on during the day.

I've seen those beaches.

Been on them.

And I bet they didn't think a thing about gators.

They were having fun with their kid. A kid who probably took a nap and was still on Nebraska time.

It's a sad situation and that family will have to live with this pain for the rest of their lives.

Apparently there are policies about the gators. Disney is going to work with officials to decide what to do about the gators. That says to me it is not all up to Disney to be able to decide when and how many gators can be taken out.

If a lake posts "no swimming", to me, that means stay out of the water for whatever reason. Because that sign means they don't want you in the lake. And in Florida - that reason could easily be alligators.

Of course, I grew up on a BIG lake with undertoe - wading could get you swept out and drowned at certain times.
