We may be losing our offices

My parent company is big on employee footprint.  They now only own two buildings in the world, my building and a plant in Mexico.  They lease the rest of the buildings all over the world...

Now they are thinking about selling and re-leasing our building.  This would mean that no one, NO ONE, would have an office any longer.  The VPs will have 4 foot tall cubicles, the rest of us would have a work space.  A table.  A laptop.  A phone with a headset.  A chair. THAT is ALL.

They have already implemented this in every other office building.  I've been to a few.  I can't even imagine having to work like that.

But the savings are crazy.  We would save about $5 Million a year. That's not insignificant.  I just pray they hold off for a while...

I think I'd rather work from home, than in a common work space.

Do you think they would go for that?

Wow all kinds of changes going on at work for you Oh4. I hope you don't get relegated to a cube farm. That would suck.

FWM, I can't work from home. Not that they wouldn't let me, I just can't do it. I'm not disciplined enough. And with G home now, I would NEVER get anything done! LOL!

Lex, it's not even a cube farm. It's desks side by side. Only the VPs would have cubes. I'm going to try to find a picture of one of our sister companies workspaces. I honestly don't think I can do it.

But on the other hand, G and I are working on franchising a concert venue / tourist attraction.

Our front office has 3 desks That sort of face each other but there is a room of space between them. I started out there & moved up. I didn't mind it but if we were all on the phone at the same time it was distracting. And I'm with you the lacking discipline to work from home. Heck at the office I still spend half my time here!

Oh dear. I hope they hold off. I have to share an office, and that's wearing very thin.

That is the wave of the future, ohfour. DH had a corner office the size of a large conference room when we met, and now he's in a similar environment. And he's a corporate officer.

Currently I have an office, but when we move, we will be going towards that kind of environment as well. I'm not looking forward to it either. But what can you do.

I've never had an office job but I think it would be fun to have a cubicle to decorate. I would hate to have to share space though, ugh I hope that doesn't happen for awhile

Looks like a lot of the offices in major companies that I have seen over here. Our office was like this the last few years I worked and I did not like it at all.... No sense of privacy, etc.

I was going to say suck it up buttercup until I read the bolded.  That is horrible.  Cube farms work somewhat, a bunch of desks in a wide open space does not.

I can't go to Hobby Lobby for the same reason.

I get ideas.

I would not get a thing done in that environment. Hopefully you never have to work on anything confidential - everyone would see it!! We had someone suggest that type of format and then they realized that if they were typing up performance documents, the whole world could see them and it was a huge liability. Can you work that angle at all?!

Good luck.

This is a pretty good point.  There are privacy laws that could be at risk in such an environment.  Now if they go this route, it will leave a lot of extra space, what is that space going to be?

This reminds me of the "open concept" idea in elementary schools.

Worst.Idea.Ever....or at least, in the top three!

I had that when I was in Middle School.  The noise level was awful.

Is that where they group tables together?  They do that in the boys' school.  Then they change it up each quarter so kids are sitting with different kids.    Not a big fan of that, but they do that with adult training now, too.  Call them break out groups where we bounce ideas off each other.  They do that with elementary schools.  Makes the kids work together to come up with solutions.  Personally, I think it can be helpful but it can also be oppressive.

The school I visited had NO classrooms, FNW. There was just a huge open space, with 4 - 5 different classes. There were a few screens to designate which "room" was which.

Common sense, right? Of course, as a visitor, I had NO idea which "room" was which.

I went to an elementary school like that in the '70s.  They called the big areas pods.  I came into the environment in 3rd grade after attending a small private school that had a teacher & 2 classroom aids for about 15 students.  I did terribly with the transition & almost failed 3rd grade.  I would get up & wander out of class to another that was more interesting.   I have to agree one of the worst ideas ever.
