Hamster sitter fees

Okay, my neighbor will be taking care of Fluffy while we go on vacation.  We'll be gone a week.  I will be bringing the cage and food, etc., to her house.  All she needs to do is change the water daily and feed her daily.    She hasn't give me a fee, says whatever I feel comfortable with.  Also, she will be caring for her for 4 days then passing her off to someone else for 3 days.

What does everyone think is a reasonable fee I should pay her?

Is this an adult? I'd probably get her a gift card as a thank you.

If it's an adult - I'd do a gift thing as a thank you as flan said. If it's a child - I'm thinking 20 bucks.

It wouldn't occur to me to charge someone for watching a hamster. A dog I can see. I agree with LL

It's a young woman who is taking time off from her job to have more time with her son during the summer. She has offered to house sit, pet sit, etc., for neighbors to earn a little extra money. She does this every year since starting nursing school (she got prego at 17 and chose to keep the baby and raise him). I want to make it worth her while because we'll need someone to take her again when we go to Cali in October. She would probably do it for free because our boys are friends, but I know she's struggling a little financially and want to help her out, too. She is newly married and they are living in her parents' guest house to save money to get their own place.

I'm wondering too, if it's adults or kids taking care of the hamsters.

If it's kids, I'd probably pay $5 a day. $20 to the kid that watched it 4 days, and $15 to the one who watched it 3 days.

If it's adults, I like the gift card/s idea.

We were posting at the same time.

Do you think the cash would be more help to her?

Give her $50. In cash. A $50 bill. You'll have a friend for life.

Yep.  And she will be more than willing to do it again.

We pay $20 a day for a lady to take care of the cats while we are gone.  She would probably do it for free.  She LOVES our cats, especially Dex...sometimes she just stops by to play with him...

I think so.  Cats are far different that a hamster.

We pay our dog sitter $25 a day. All he has to do is feed the dogs & keep their water bowls filled.

I'm just trying to figure out who to pay what.  I hope that's not petty.

Trudy, those poor little boys would be crushed to come home & find fluffy dead.  Trust me I know from experience.  My dad completely forgot about ours when my mom took us to my grandparents for a week.  We came home to dead rodents.  We cried.

She can split the money with whomever helps her out. She'll take care of that. My guess is her mom or cousins or someone related will take over the duties. She is the only adult left living at home, but she has 4 brothers and a twin sister who comes over a lot. Her nieces and nephews have played at our house. Big family.

Well, I will let her know that if something were to happen, not to feel guilty. The boys know that Fluffy has an expiration date. They want a boy hamster next time.

My brother used to go out late at night and buy replacement hamsters for his daughter. There were at least 3 replacements he faked as the original. He explained color difference in age. Not sure how older his daughter was that he could pull off such a coup.

DH pet sat for his ex SIL's cat. The cat was on its last legs. It died in his care. He had it cremated and gave the ashes to them. They were sad, of course, but expected its death. DH spent over $1k on this damned dead cat. Me, I would have buried it in their yard.

I'd do $10 a day in separate envelopes. Tell her to give the second envelope when she drops off the hamster.

Of course, if she's putting herself out there as a pet sitter, maybe you should just ask her what she is going to charge you per day.

Gerbils are better...more intelligent, cuter, and they have tails (which makes catching them easier!)

Good point. And it should depend, obviously, on how much work she does. I know a lady who has a PT job as a dog walker & makes good money.

We had a gerbil.  I think hamsters are friendlier.

Okay after reading the background info I agree that a heftier sum would be really well received. The only thing is that might set a precedent for future sittings.

Vette!

Which is "better?"

A hamster (no) or a gerbil (YES)?

Just take your time & answer truthfully.

LOL

I had gloves with chinchilla trim.

Mawmaw has a chinchilla wrap.

I have a chinchilla wrap I inherited from my grandmother. And a squirrel cape from my mom, along with her full length mink, and a silver fox coat I bought when I was 29. I love wearing fur!

Pawpaw gave me the gloves the same Christmas he gave mawmaw the wrap.

I was 7 I think.

I had rabbit coat. Didnt wear it much.

Now my leather coat, I wore it constantly.

Caitlyn has been wearing it since her freshman year.

She wants to pass it down to her kid some day.

Mawmaw has a black mink full length coat.

She use to let me play dress up with her furs.
