Do you like yard sales? Have you ever put one on yourself? I did it once. That was enough for me. It was a lot of work and not worth the time and effort in my opinion. For me, if i am done with something i load it in my car and get it out of my house ASAP. But, i know people who seem to make a nice profit on their yard sales. I guess selling just isn't my thing.
I give everything away. I hate selling things. I tried to do Freecycle. I got rid of a Nordic trak that way, lol. And, i did post on a local classifieds and sold something that way. But, it takes time, you have to make appts with people, etc. It's just easier to take it to Goodwill. I used to try to give things away for free. But, people are so entitled now, that if you have something to give away, they expect YOU to do the leg work, deliver it to them, etc. I don't mind giving something away but it has to be on my terms. If you want it, come over to my house and get it, i am not delivering it to you. And, if you can't even be bothered to do that, then forget it. So, now, everything goes to Goodwill. And, what doesn't go to Goodwill goes in the trash.

Isn't that the truth. My neighbor's adult step son is finally moving out of her house. He bought his own place. I told him I was having one of those charities coming to pick up an entertainment center, night stand, and coffee table that are in my garage. He wants them but wants me to store them. Umm no, I want them out of my garage. I'm not waiting another two months until he moves. And he has the space to store them!

Yup. On occasion i still try to give stuff away but only on my terms. For instance, i got a new sofa and I asked my son if he knew anyone who might want the old one. His GF's brother wanted it. So, i said, fine, they need to come over by X date and pick it up. If it is still here when the new sofa arrives, then it is getting hauled away. They did come and get it. That is how i give stuff away. You want it, then come get it by X date or it is gone.
I had one before we moved from Ohio to Indiana. It was totally worth it. I wanted to purge most of our furniture - we had been there for almost 20 years - and a lot of household stuff. If you have big ticket items like that it's totally worth it. I advertised in the paper for 3 days for $50 I think. I hauled all of our stuff out into the yard and our driveway. I had a ton of kids clothes and books and toys - Little Tykes stuff to prom dresses. I priced all the prom dresses at $25 and all the kids clothes at $1 each and then priced the big ticket stuff to move. Sold it all and made about $1100 give or take. Paid my DD's boyfriend at the time to haul the rest to the curb and let the pickers take it.

Thinking about it now, it wasn't much work. Just one full day of work but for what I made it was fine. Plus I work retail - setting up sales and making money like that is what I do.

My Eastern Star chapter has a huge yard sale once a year - we all accumulate our discards and bring them to one house on a busy street (with plenty of parking!). We arrive at a specific time (7:40, 7:50, 8:00 etc.) and one group swarms to the car and unloads everything to the tables; another group prices everything; another group arranges what needs to be displayed; in no time at all, we're ready for the public!
In the warm months, we offer iced tea and/or lemonade to those who have bought items; in the cool months, we offer coffee.
We also have a BOGO table - buy any one item, get one free. Gets rid of a lot of stuff!
We also call Goodwill the week before, and make an appointment for them to come at the end of the day. Anything that doesn't sell gets donated. Win-win!
The local college here does that too. When it's move out week all the kids bring their unwanted crap to the football field. The college charges $5 a head for entry and then a flat fee for each item. Chairs $5, desks $10 for example. They make a ton of money and donate it all to charity.

I actually need to get stuff together and do another one.
Where we live now isn't conducive to a profitable yard sale.
So I will give the flea market people 5 bucks for a table and set up there.
I'm aiming for around end of September, first of October. Won't be so hot, crowds will be better.

I love yard sales - both having and going. I'm also an opportunist seller. If I have something not for sale and someone sees it and wants it, I can often be talked out of it for the right price. Sometimes, I'll ask the buyer to make an offer - which I usually accept since it's usually a reasonable offer.
I, too, can't believe the gall of some people when you're giving stuff away. When I moved in with my ex, I sold what I could then posted a free ad on the last day. A woman emailed me and told me she wants it all so I need to box it up and drive it to her (would've been 20ish miles one way). I told her I could deliver for a fee. She said she won't pay since the stuff is free so I told her no and she responded with a sob story. I told her no again and she called me heartless so I blocked her. The kicker is, all she had to do was be polite and I just might have drove what was left out to her. Delivery happens on my schedule though unless the person is paying for it. I tend to drive all over the Valley so it's usually not a problem to run something over to someone when I'm in the area.
Prom dresses - I remember when I sold my prom dress. This woman insisted that it should only be a quarter since it was a yard sale dress. LOL! No. I ended up donating it to one of the girls on the reservation. I'd rather give it away to someone who appreciates it than sell it to a cheap turd.

Everything is for sale for the right price.

Pretty much! Sold a microwave once because a neighbor was over, liked it, and wanted it. I was moving to place with a pre-installed microwave so I didn't need it anyway.
None of the people who bought the prom dresses we sold even blinked about the price. They asked if they could try them on inside, which I did allow. We didn't have anything left in the house to take so what did I care ?! Lol But they happily paid $25 for them. I think we paid no less than $200 for any of them so it was a steal for them.
The only thing I refused to sell was the Little Tykes easel. I had it out there for $15. It was in perfect condition (they retail for $60) and a woman offered me $5 for it. Then she told me if I didn't sell it to her I was stupid. I told her I would donate it to the church up the street before I sold it to her for that. She was an idiot. Sure enough I didn't get another offer and she came back and offered me $5 again. I told her to get off my property and brought it into the house. Lol Gave it to the kids up the street the next day.

Wish we had yard sales or garage sales or anything like that over here. We have a ton of stuff (too good to throw away LOL) and not a clue about what to do with it. There are companies that will come and take it away for a fee. No, thanks.
I went to a couple once when I was in Michigan with the ex-boyfriend's sister. I bought a plate to hang on the wall. That's the extent of my experience.
