Vet question

I'll freely admit that I don't know much about medical anything,  I was plagued with a weak stomach so I'm not interested in learning either :p

But recently I posted about my dog Ajax getting his foot caught in the fence and literally de-gloving it (pulling the skin and fur away from his bone).

About a zillion vet visits later they finally said we could leave the bandage off and to let it heal on it's own. Almost immediately after he got home though he started really aggressively licking it and nibbling at it and opened up the fresh skin spot, so we put the cone on his head. Then he was hitting it with the cone and it started bleeding all over the place so we decided to rebandage it ourselves just to keep it safe. That was a few days ago. Over the course of a few days his foot has swollen up real bad, it's like a bright pink color but his sores seem so be closed. He keeps trying to rip his bandage off and get to it, so it must be hurting him or itching or something.

I guess my question is what does infection look like? I'm just going to have to bring him back to the vet I guess, it's just I'm already hundreds of dollars in the hole. Maybe it's still healing and this is normal? I can try to post pictures if that will help.

Well, shoot.

I guess it's similar to an infection in a person? The last infection I had was near the end of my finger. The skin was swollen & tight & had to be lanced (to let it drain).

Hopefully if you describe it to the vet, he can tell you IF you need an appointment or not.

He was antibiotics but they ran out some time ago and the vet didn't feel the need to refill them. Yeah hopefully if I just describe it on the phone maybe it's no big deal

I would get the anti biotics. It's pretty obvious he has an infection. The cone of shame is appropriate. :) Call the vet and tell them what is going on and ask for the prescription and bring him back after a few days. Infections can be tricky.

BTW love the post title with your name next to it as the one who posted.

How red is it? Redness right on the outer edge of the wound means it's healing. If it's red, swollen, and warm to the touch around the wound it means it's infected. Is it leaking? What is it leaking? Blood? What color blood? Any discharge other than blood?

For a bandage have you tried coban?

It's like his whole paw is bright pink and swollen up like a little balloon compared to his other paw. It only bled a little the one day after his cone scratched it, otherwise it's closed up and there's no discharge. (Thank goodness because that might just put me over the edge).

Coban? I'll have to look that up. I'm just using standard gauze pads and wrap stuff.

Oh! When I first wrapped it, I put a little A&D on the bandage (it's like neosporin with vitamins). Oh my gosh, do you think that's what caused all this? Did I hurt him????no

You can get coban anywhere you buy bandages. It's great for dogs because they have a lot harder time chewing it off. It looks almost like an ace bandage but it's not. It sticks to itself on only one side. It's fabulous stuff. Neosporin is great too. It doesn't sound infected. Might need some antibiotics JIC though. What I would do for now is get some coban and put Neosporin on it, then an ace bandage, then wrap it in coban. Wrap both above AND below the injury so that if he chews it will take him awhile to get to it. And wrap it tightly but not too tightly. Clean and dry. Call the vet tomorrow and let them know what you've done and what it looks like.

And don't buy your meds from your vet. Not trying to be mean here but vets charge an arm and a leg for them. A regular pharmacy will sell you the same stuff dirt cheap. I know, we get all Carlee's seizure meds from Target pharmacy. Our vet calls them in.

LOL flan. No. I just know that OUR vet gave us the option of getting our meds somewhere else. He was going to charge us around $360 but he told us we could get it cheaper somewhere else. We ended up getting that prescription at Wal-Mart for $15. That's where vets make a lot of their money. Not trying to bash vets either because we have a wonderful vet.

LOL Ok. Before getting the dogs we have now I honestly didn't know anything about making dogs better. Throughout our ordeal I've come to learn that you treat them a lot like humans. They even take our meds.

Is there a chance you wrapped it too tightly? If not, I would say infection.
Soak it in salt water, keep it clean, and get more antibiotics when you can.

Well, turns out I was just freaking out over nothing. She said it was doing fine but she re-wrapped it for me. I guess it's okay for it to be all pink and swollen and stuff, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to have to chop his foot off!

Damn dog just cost me another $60 bucks! Lol

Yes, but the peace of mind is well worth $60 I am guessing. Glad to hear things are going along OK. So darn hard when our pets can't talk to us - well, carry on a conversation, I mean.

Vette, you did the right thing.

And $60 bucks, is a small price to pay, to know that Ajax is okay.smile

Give him a belly rub, from me.

He is so cute.wink

I would say I told you so but that would be mean!  biggrin  j/k  Buy some coban.  It's harder for them to chew off.  I can't tell if he has some on right now or not.  It's more expensive than gauze but well worth it.  Depending how big the roll is it's around five bucks more or less.

Coban is awesome stuff and most people don't know about it. It sticks to itself and itself only! So you just wrap what you need wrapping and no tape needed! It's fantastic. And it repels water so that's a plus. They always used it on my knee bandage when I had knee surgery. It makes kind of a fake cast type thing. It's great stuff. And it comes in every color there is! Yeah. I just got two packages on the clearance aisle for a buck a piece.

It's the stuff they put around your elbow after you donate blood (well, here at least).

Yes. They are moving to Coban rather than tape because so many people have tape allergies. Coban is more cloth like.
