DEAR AMY: My family will be getting together for a mountain cabin vacation again this year. One family insists on bringing their two pets. The dog is untrained, messes on the carpet and growls and snaps at people. The cat howls loudly during the night. We have pets, but we choose to leave them at home, as a courtesy to others. Am I the only person that thinks that “pet people” should leave animals at home for group vacations?
DEAR IRKED: During a group vacation at shared accommodations, pet owners should get every other participant to approve their desire to bring their pets. Many people are allergic, and/or simply don’t want to spend their own vacations around other people’s animals.
So far, your family members are lucky that you don’t bring your own pets along; I could imagine that if various sets of animals don’t mix well, it could create big problems for humans and animals alike.
I assume readers will offer their own perspectives.

Vacations are meant to be stress-free. I can't imagine subjecting my cat to the stresses of being hauled off to a new location, with new smells, and taking the chance that she might escape the confines of our rooms.
On vacation, I want to be waited on, hand and foot. I don't want to have to worry about food and pure water for my beloved pet.
My coworker takes their dogs when they go on vacation. They go to a campground on the beach with a couple of her nieces and their families. Each has their own camper and site. So the dogs aren't an issue that I know of.
I've thought about renting a cabin and taking corgi on vacation with me. But I don't think I would take him if other people were going.
Somebody spank me, I brought my papillon to a family reunion once and he was a smashing hit, everyone loved him. But I did have his crate and he was fine to chill in there whenever there were activities going on that didn't require his presence. I also asked my grandma ahead of time, she was the coordinator.

We recently went to a wedding shower for my BIL and his soon to be. My already VSS SIL brought her dog to the WEDDING SHOWER. She did bring his crate but the dog barked incessantly while he was in it. Mostly the kids played in the crate.
DN is graduating next year and I don't know what we're going to do with our dogs. None of the kennels will accept them because they take medicine. And our vet says he feels that being in a large kennel could trigger Carlee's seizures. We're going to have to find someone we can trust beyond measure because Carlee has to have meds three times a day. I know DH is going to be calling 400 times a day.

Anyone stop to think that what ever mountain place they rent doesn't allow dogs? That is actually the answer, rent a place that doesn't allow pets. I don't bring Sonny on vacation because dogs are not allowed for the very reasons stated in the response.
I wouldn't share accommodations with someone who insisted on bringing their pet.

We have always boarded our dogs with the vet or a family member or friend comes to take care of them.

Our dogs would NOT like it. They need a familiar place: their house. Period.

Good luck finding a housesitter.
Maybe one of the ladies at your church group might know someone. Or the vet?
I think people make a big mistake in not getting their animals accustomed to boarding. Yes, for an animal with medical conditions, that may not be possible. However, my advice to anyone getting a new puppy is to take your pet to the local kennel on occasion for a weekend and board them. Then, they can develop some familiarity and do fine. My parents had to board their pet one time when my dad needed surgery. I lived out of town in an apt. They took the dog to the kennel and the dog got very depressed and would not eat or drink and ended up going into kidney failure. They caught it in time and he was ok but if he been boarded longer, then the outcome might not have been good.
Animals have to fit into your lifestyle, not the other way around. I am surprised the vet can't board the dog that needs medical attention.
NJN I'm surprised the kennels won't accommodate the medications. The one I go to has no problem with that, but then it's a small kennel, almost more like a family business.

We were going to bring fluffy with us to the beach, but two neighbors have agreed to care for her while we're away. Whew.
As for dogs/cats, uh, no. But I know people who do, usually when they travel by motor home. It was cheaper to take the dog with rather than kennel it. My friend takes her little mutt with her when she travels by car, but stays in pet friendly motels. Anyone that came to our house for a visit would not be welcome if they brought pets with them. I think it's rude to bring unwanted pets to someone else's house. (Emphasis on "unwanted").
When the dogs are boarded at the vet, they get their annual checkups and shots and all that stuff.

We have a really nice boarding place here that has a swimming pool and all for the dogs. It's more like doggie daycare than anything else. But you have to fill out a long list of paperwork and they don't except dogs on medication. But because of her seizures the vet doesn't think it's a good thing to put her there anyway. I've been asking around a bit and I think I might be able to find someone. Hopefully so. We need to travel about eight hours to watch DN graduate. Layla get extremely car sick. So that is a no go anyway.

Some of the techs at my vet will pet sit as a side job. And they are able to give medication. You might want to ask your vet.
I asked at my vet and they said they could come over and give the dogs their meds but not really pet sit. So not sure how doable that is. They would need to be let out during the day. Honestly, someone has always been here since we got them minus short day trips. We've never been gone overnight except when DN was living here. Her graduation will be the first time everyone is gone. Weird to think about it. I belong to a local pet group though and I asked in there. There was a lady that pet sits. I'm going to have to follow up on that.

I'd watch them if I were closer.
Thanks. I know you would. And I know you well enough to know you'd take good care of them. And they all love kids! Your little guy would have a blast!

We just got done with a week of cat and fish sitting. DS loved seeing the kitties and ignored the fish.
While easy to pet sit fish aren't really fun to sit either. My dogs love little kids. They really do. They will bark at adults but put a baby down and they are all happy. The last baby we had here got kind of aggravated because the dogs were licking his head.
