Pat Summitt, the most successful coach in the history of woman's basketball, has died aged 64.

The legendary University of Tennessee coach had been suffering with Alzheimer's disease since 2011.

She was surrounded by family and close friends when she passed in the early hours on Tuesday.

Summitt stepped down as Tennessee's coach in 2012, one year after announcing her diagnosis of early onset dementia.

Pat Summitt, the most successful coach in the history of woman's basketball, has died aged 64. The legendary University of Tennessee coach had been suffering with Alzheimer's disease since 2011

She retired after a phenomenally successful career which saw her notch up 1,098 wins to just 208 defeats - the most career wins of any Division I men's or women's basketball coach.

Her death was confirmed in a post uploaded onto Twitter by the Pat Summitt Foundation.

Her son, Tyler Summitt, issued a statement saying his mother died peacefully at Sherrill Hill Senior Living in Knoxville, surrounded by those who loved her most.

It read: 'Since 2011, my mother has battled her toughest opponent, early onset dementia, Alzheimer's Type.

'We can all find peace in knowing she no longer carries the heavy burden of this disease.'

With an icy glare on the sidelines, Summitt - who was born in Clarksville, Tennessee in June 1954 - led the Lady Vols to eight national championships and prominence on a campus steeped in the traditions of the football-rich south until she retired in 2012.

She was named NCAA coach of the year seven times and played for the first ever U.S Olympic womens' team in 1976, taking home a silver medal.

I am absolutely heartbroken. I LOVED watching her coach. She is definitely a legend, and there will probably never be another like her. By far, the greatest coach of all time...

I don't follow sports so I have no idea who she was, but sad that she left this world at such a young age. And sad for her family having to go through losing a loved one to Alzheimer's. I know first hand how heart-breaking it is.

Kudos to her for her committment to women's basketball.  I really enjoy watching Coach Geno.  And, i love Cheryl Reeves from the Minnesota Lynx.  Oh, and Muffet McGraw of Notre Dame.

She was absolutely amazing.  I've been to more of her games than I can count, including the one where she won her 1000th game.

flan, you should pick up her books to read. There are three books, with the last one being written after her diagnosis.  I have two autographed copies.

When Reach for the Summitt came out, I took DD to her book signing. We went to SO many games.  She was indescribable.

When she first started coaching, it was her.  No assistants, no water boys, the University wouldn't even wash the players' uniforms.  After every game, she took the uniforms home and washed them. Often not getting more than a couple hours sleep.

Also, every single player that she coached graduated.  That's unheard of...

Yes.  She set the standard.  She had passion and was a great teacher and person.

I'm not a basketball fan, but she was a great coach.

She absolutely left a legacy.
