Deputies with Spartanburg County said a man faces multiple attempted murder charges after opening fire outside a nightclub early Sunday morning.
The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at Playoffz nightclub on Inman Road in Lyman.
Deputies said 32-year-old Jody Ray Thompson pulled out a gun after getting into an argument with another man and fired several rounds toward a crowd that had gathered out in front of the club.
"His rounds struck 3 victims, and almost struck a fourth victim, who in self-defense, pulled his own weapon and fired, striking Thompson in the leg," Lt. Kevin Bobo said.
Bobo said the man who shot Thompson has a valid concealed weapons permit, cooperated with investigators, and won’t be facing any charges.
"Thompson was still on the scene when deputies arrived, but the initial scene was chaotic," Bobo said. "It wasn’t until victims and witnesses were interviewed, and video from the scene was reviewed that Thompson was identified as the suspect."
Thompson was charged four counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
Bobo said none of the victims' injuries were life threatening.
Thompson is being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

Its great that this man was stopped from killing more people. I thought a "mass shooting" was killing 4 or more?
And if he had been allowed to continue, there most likely WOULD have been a mass shooting. The CCP holder prevented that from happening...
Apparently it's better to just let the bad guy kill as many as possible than stop it.
I mean, let's focus on the wording and definitions inside of the fact that a law abiding citizen stopped a possible mass murder with a concealed weapon.

Right??? LOL!

Well, not actually that is a guess or assumption and not a fact.
I am glad he stopped the shooter of course. I honestly don't think that just because you have a weapon it means you know how to use it in a situation like that.
Its possible that the hero could miss and kill someone, I mean if we are going to go on guesses and assumptions, this is a valid point.
I like that he shot him in the leg. It shows he was trying to stop the craziness but he didn't take a kill shot. That's the kind of person who should have a carry permit.
Sure, he could miss and hit someone else. But if didn't have a gun, the shooter would not have been stopped. And if not stopped, more people would have died. It's a matter of which is worse.
Even when administering CPR, you need to crack a rib to save a life. So which is worse? Remain unresponsive and die, or live and fix your rib.
I like that he shot him in the leg. It shows he was trying to stop the craziness but he didn't take a kill shot. That's the kind of person who should have a carry permit.
He was aiming for his chest, or he should have been.
So you can't carry unless you're willing to kill someone and not just stop them? This guy absolutely did the right thing. I'll never understand the sitting duck mentality that gets displayed here.

...it is proper protocol to aim for the chest. Anyone trained in the proper use of a firearm would know this.

I doubt he was aiming for his chest. He was just trying to stop him not kill him.

That should be changed then. If others had aimed for the leg instead of the chest the country would be in far less turmoil.

I'm sure he knew the protocol he just decided to use less than lethal force. Some people don't WANT to kill and I bet if the shooter had continued then a shot to the chest or head would have been in order.

On an earlier thread, the advice was given to aim for the area of greatest mass.
If you can only shoot to kill then you shouldn't be carrying a gun. Using your discretion as to whether a kill shot or a less lethal shot is needed was part of my training so I don't know why you think only shooting to kill is an option.

umm ya sure.
He's still a hero, whether you want to knock him or not...

I was not knocking him. I was saying if he was following proper protocol, he would have been aiming for the shooters chest. I doubt he was aiming for the shooters leg. That is all.

Haha..So you think his only option was a kill shot? Obviously he stopped the shooter with a less than lethal shot but it doesn't fit YOUR agenda.

He was aiming for his chest, or he should have been.
The shooter was stopped and can stand trial for his crimes.
It's practically the perfect ending.
You amaze me.
First you say no concealed weapons.
Then you say he should have killed the criminal.
If it wasn't for the concealed weapon, the shooter would have shot how many people?
And then you would be saying how evil guns are and no one should be carrying.
What exactly do you want?

You don't know that he didn't.
AND you don't know that he did. If he was properly trained, he would aim for the greatest body mass, the chest. Funny how you forget these things.....

Yeah, and if someone is running...or, um falling down, or hell, tripped on a shoelace, you don't hit that mass. It's not a Science. You know...moving target???

Yes.
You aim at the center mass.
But wasn't it you saying how hard it would be to aim and hit a moving target in a stress situation and that anyone drinking would be a terrible shot?
Yet, here is proof of the exact opposite.
You just dont want anyone to have a gun but the police.
