The brother of the boy who was accidentally killed at a Florida firing range on Sunday has spoken out, saying it was a 'complete freak accident.'

David Brumby, 24, was at the High Noon Gun Range in Sarasota with his younger brother, Stephen Brumby,14, his 12-year-old sister and their 64-year-old father, William Clayton Brumby.

The father was shooting with his children to teach them gun safety and 'how to protect a family' when he accidentally shot and killed Stephen Brumby.

'My dad was firing a .22 - just a little semi-automatic pistol. What happened was the ejected casing -- which is super hot -- bounced off the wall and ricocheted down my dad's shirt,' David Brumby told WTSP.

Personally, i think that kids don't belong around guns. Maybe at 14 to go begin hunting with rifles only. That's just my opinion. Guns are lethal and deadly. There is nothing like a gun to kill. Guns kill quickly and efficiently. No, you aren't likely to inflict mass murder with a knife. Yes, it can and has been done but it is much more difficult. That lethal nature of a gun is it's danger but it is also why guns are so important. It is the great equalizer for women, the weak, frail, etc. We need guns. Law abiding people need guns. The military need guns. However with that comes a grave responsibility, which is to keep children safe. Just telling kids 'stay away from guns' is lazy parenting and puts the burden completely on the child which is absurd. Just because that worked when i was a kid doesn't mean it works now. It is a different time. I would never say 'just stay away" from my loaded gun to a child. That's absurd. As for gun ranges, guns aren't for play. And, taking 3 kids to a gun range, like you are going to Dairy Queen may not be such a good idea. You should never relax in possession of your gun. Just my opinion.

Keeping his gun in the hand he was using to scratch his back was asinine. I would be using the gun on myself if I were him. How terrible to know that your own stupidity killed your child.

It was a thoughtless accident.  He reacted to the spent casing.  It was a split second of not thinking.  We have all had split seconds of "that wasn't smart" but mostly nothing bad happens.  Unfortunately for him, it diid.

Tragic accident.

That family will need a lifetime of prayer and support.

So, he should have just killed himself right there and caused even more tragedy for his wife and other children?

I am not saying he should have. I am saying I don't think I would be able to live with the fact that I killed my child and I probably would kill myself because of it. I never mentioned HIM killing himself.

Pretty sure it's gun safety 101...but whatever.

And he will only exist now, not live.

That may be and that is very sad.  However, his other living children still need him.  I hope he can at least take some comfort in that.

I was taught how to shoot at that age. We'd go to the canyon regularly and target practice. But both my brother and I listened and followed directions. And we respected weapons. We were also taught about kickback and flying shells. When one of us was firing, all others stood away. Away from where the shells would be leaving the weapon.

My boys, on the other hand, think they know it all. I would not take them shooting, at least not together. They would need to be separated.

Each family and situation is different. This was a horrible accident. He reacted to the burning shell on his flesh. He will never be the same. Prayers go out to him and his family.
