I agree that this incident is pretty straight forward.

Of course, there are "bad" LEO's, just as there are incompetent librarians, etc.

The difference is that, if I incorrectly answer a reference question, the patron doesn't die because of my mistake...not yet, anyway!

It being daylight on the video didn't set off any red flags for me. I was in Oklahoma in May and discovered that it was still broad daylight at 2000/2030. I'm still amazed at how light it was. Here in AZ, it's dark by 2000. Before that trip, I would've assumed the video was a fake or the time was reported wrong.

Re taking the video instead of helping her bf - That's strange to me. If DH got shot, my first thought would be to help him, not to whip out my phone and start videoing the situation.

You make this statement from a position of privilege though. You don't have the same experiences as a marginalized population who is used to seeing their brothers and sisters shot by the police. If that was the case your first instinct might be to capture the incident on video in order to help prove your case. They made this woman spend the night in jail for no reason. They separated her from her daughter and kept her in jail overnight. They had nothing to charge her with. They just didn't want her out on the street telling the story of what happened so they held onto her. Damn good thing she videoed it or we may not have believed it. The cops erased it from FB as soon as they took her into custody - which is illegal.

You are remarkably wrong about that. I do not make that statement from a position of privilege. I do not have a position of privilege. If you knew me, you would know that.

I made that statement from a position of how I view the world. It's just something I wouldn't do. I wouldn't dream of leaving a cart out of the corral and I wouldn't dream of videoing the situation if my husband got shot. I just wouldn't. The concept is foreign to me.

Privilege doesn't mean socio economic all the time. It means a variety of things. As a white person, you have an automatic position of privilege compared to a black person. She was not allowed to touch him. The officer repeatedly yelled at her to keep her hands on the dash. Maybe she would have helped him if she had been allowed. Maybe she responds to dress differently than you - that's ok and not right nor wrong.

I never commented on what she was allowed or not allowed to do. Nor did I say she's right or wrong. I said I wouldn't have done that.

And, no, in my area white does not equal privilege. Again, I have no privilege. But, I won't change your mind so I will respectfully take my leave of this particular topic.

Of course, the flip side of that is that if you are wrong, it doesn't usually mean you will be shot, either.

There is something called "learned helplessness" where she would not render aid having been conditioned not to. Obviously if he was shot, she might be shot to help him. On the other hand, she didn't even plead or ask the officer if she could assist him. She also thinks he was just shot in the arm so i don't think she understood the seriousness of his injury either.

The cop was screaming at her to keep her hands on the dash. He was actually screaming like a crazy person. I wouldn't have asked if I were her. Merely asking could have gotten her shot. If you listen/watch the video, the officer is out of control emotionally. He is yelling and screaming and is MUCH more emotional than anyone else at the scene. I wouldn't have asked him for anything out of fear for my life.

I agree that I don't think she realized how badly he was injured.
