If white people have so much privilege, where are the programs exclusively for white people?
Minorities have scholarships, affirmative action, etc. for which white people are not eligible. I don't care that they do, just making a point. To my knowledge, white people don't have anything given to them because they're white.
There is no hatred. Says anyone on this board. Never.

Oh, you mean the programs that have existed since the country was founded?
Legal segregation of schools was stopped in the U.S. by federal enforcement of a series of Supreme Court decisions after Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. All legally-enforced public segregation was abolished by the Civil Rights Act of 1964.[4] It passed after civil rights demonstrations resulted in public opinion turning against enforced segregation. De facto segregation — segregation "in fact", without sanction of law — persists in varying degrees to the present day. The contemporary racial segregation seen in the United States in residential neighborhoods has been shaped by public policies, mortgage discrimination, and redlining, among other factors.[5] Hypersegregation is a form of racial segregation that consists of the geographical grouping of racial groups. Most often, this occurs in cities where the residents of the inner city are African Americans and the suburbs surrounding this inner core are often white European American residents.

Well, I hate you...

I'm okay with that.

I believe the premise would be that white people don't need programs exclusively for white people because nobody is discriminating against them and they have more options.

No, Flan.
Programs exclusively FOR white people. Meaning, you must be white to get x program.
Segregation wasn't FOR white people. Certain groups living together is not FOR white people.

So, an all-white country club is not FOR white people?

Just a guess though....
Then there is no privilege. Programs that take away opportunities from white people lessen their options. At best, they level the playing field thus removing privilege.
And, programs that disallow white people are discriminating against white people. Again, I don't care that those programs exist. But, call it what it is.

A country club isn't a program. Since you brought it up, provide a link to a country club that specifically states it only allows white people.

I have not read this whole thread. Sometimes it is really difficult with multiple quoting. But this statement stands out. While white people may seem to have privilege & in some cases do, there are few programs to help the white underprivileged like there are for minorities. And do not for one minute believe there are no white underprivileged. Just think about Appalachia & other poor regions. Are they getting free lunches, etc.?
We are suffering more from class than minority...it is just easier to diversify by race. It makes it harder for the lower class to unify. Seriously do you think Kanye cares more about "Black Lives" than his next tour or even his next Tweet, even if it is about "Black Lives"?

Fine. I agree to head up the Appalachian Lives Matter movement!

I have a friend whose first name is an ethnic one that goes back hundreds of years in her family. But in order to get a job she has to abbreviate her "ghetto" name and go by her middle name instead. In the meantime, my daughter has an ethnic name that goes back hundreds of years in our family and no one blinks when she puts her real name on applications.
THAT my friends is white privilege.
When someone sees Kate and also KaNeisha on a job application and looks to their qualifications before deciding who gets the phone call...then we can say privilege is gone.

Awww.... poor thing.
Has to use her middle name.
Give me a break.

Does she have a job or does she sit and cry about about how she is held back by her name?
It's a name.
She has options and uses them.
She doesn't need compassion.
She needs a pat on the back for not giving in to the "poor me" mentality.

My library serves a community that I consider to be "nice" and "safe."
And, yes, the people here get free lunches...In the summer, there are 2 main programs. On a year-round basis, local churches help out.

Nope. But you MIGHT want to consider RESEARCH that proves MM's point.
"Job applicants with white names needed to send about 10 resumes to get one callback; those with African-American names needed to send around 15 resumes to get one callback."
A job applicant with a name that sounds like it might belong to an African-American - say, Lakisha Washington or Jamal Jones - can find it harder to get a job. Despite laws against discrimination, affirmative action, a degree of employer enlightenment, and the desire by some businesses to enhance profits by hiring those most qualified regardless of race, African-Americans are twice as likely as whites to be unemployed and they earn nearly 25 percent less when they are employed.
That is name privilege. I bet Ashley gets more call backs than Gertrude. Stop giving your kids names that will not help in the future. Whether it's Luawanda or Bertha that's on the parents.

Well, running around yelling "White privilege' is just more of the Left trying to gin up class warfare. Why don't you ask yourself, why are African Americans faring WORSE under Obama who has been in power for 7 years and with a Democrat controlled Congress? Because liberals and the Left deal soley in Identity Politics. Govt dependence is a good thing in the world of liberals.
As for whites not experiencing racism. I have walked though black neighborhoods minding my own business and had black people shout "rice" or "cracker" at me. And, funny where is the cries of Hate Crime for these Police who were targeted because they were WHITE?
THe only race that matters is the human race. How we treat one another as HUMAN BEINGS is what matters. Race has nothing to do with anything. You shouldn't be treated better or worse based on your race. Seems we have lost Dr. King's message that your character is what matters not your color. Liberals divide and divide. Oh, they are Gay so they need different laws than you and me, etc.

Has it occurred to you that your approach doesn't work? That raising people with a "poor me" attitude and "white privilege" and blah blah really does NOT serve to make anything better? Just a thought.
We as a human race are better off than the vast majority of humans since the beginning of time. Running water, heat, food, shelter , and on and on. Yet, misery abounds. Why? Yes, there are bad people in the world. There are injustices. The answer to that isn't to live life in a bitter angry way flan. The answer is to be a good person, raise your family and help your local community.

How does that eliminate racism?
flan
Because being a "good person" means treating everyone equally.
We are not going to eliminate racism in one broad stroke. It will fade out as more and more people make the choice to be a decent human being.

Subterfuge? If her parents know that an ethic name will hold her back yet still insist on naming her that way then it is most certainly on them. As I said upthread an Ashley gets called back more often than a Gertrude or Bertha so be careful how you name your children or deal with the consequences..

Yes SUBTERFUGE, the truth that some won't acknowledge... the simple fact that a person is discriminated against because they have a name that people/employers believe to be of an undesirable ethnicity, culture or race.
Is that so hard to understand and acknowledge? The extent of racism and discrimination that you refuse to admit is a fact and yet you would rather play the blame game.
