We've discussed this on other threads, and I thought it might be good to consolidate discussions.
This is a headline on USA Today:
Pokémon Go has taken over the world since launching last week, sending millions of users into the streets to collect and battle virtual monsters on their smartphones.
With so many players sharing their locations and other personal data with the app, what could happen to all that information?
As users hand over access to their phones’ precise locations, storage and cameras to play the game, the company behind the game reserves the rights to share the data it collects with third parties including potential buyers and law enforcement.
That’s the price to “catch ‘em all” on the free-to-play game. And while companies regularly collect and profit from user data, Pokémon Go’s massive popularity and reliance on users’ locations and camera access have raised eyebrows in tech circles.
Most of us don’t read the privacy policies of apps we use. Indeed, reading all of them would take about 30 days per year, one study found. So it’s safe to assume that many players of Pokémon Go – which threatens to surpass Twitter in daily active users -- aren’t reading the fine print before logging on to chuck Poké balls, either.
(I feel like ed, posting a PSA...which is not a bad thing...)
Whether Pokemon Go can sustain its popularity in the long term comes down to how aware users are of its privacy invasions and whether they deem it a worthwile trade-off for the game’s experience.
Many companies, including Facebook and Google, sell user data and hand it over to authorities when asked. But Pokémon Go’s constant location tracking and camera access required for gameplay, paired with its skyrocketing popularity, could provide data like no app before it.
Ever use your phone in another town to find a restaurant, event or just to say hi to a friend? It tracks you.
And there is a way NOT to give complete access.
You can set up an account on Pokemon play.
Or you can go into the account you have and adjust what is allowed.
It'll run just as well with both the alternate account and restricted access.
AND you don't have to pay for anything unless you want to.
It works better than ACA.

I think the concern here is that Pokemon GO got CRAZY popular in an incredibly short period of time & many people jumped on the bandwagon without considering the ramifications.

Last week?! This only came out last week. That is crazy. My Facebook is absolutely filled with Pokemon stuff the last few days. The local PD's FB page issued a notice about playing while driving and stopping your car in the road to catch Pokemon. This is incredibly popular.
I had no idea what everyone going on about. thanks for posting this article.
The game of Pokemon has been around since the late 70s.

I was a teenager in the 90's. I know what Pokemon is, I just didn't know it was still popular.
Oh. Ok.
It has certainly evolved, that's for sure.
My boys and I went out Sunday hunting.
Did a lot of back roads.
I drove, they navigated.
On the back roads, I could drive slowly and stop if needed to.
We went to a couple nature and historic places. The boys took off around the hiking trails to play.
Then we went downtown.
Our downtown is basically a ghost town on Sundays. There are only 3 stores open in town on Sunday.
People still walk around and window shop and get ice cream. There is a park and some historic markers.
It was fun to get down there and see whole families playing together.
There was a lot of interaction and plans made to meet up again.
It was fun.

Lily was just describing what she did. She's on topic. I wouldn't have known what you all were talking about otherwise. Geesh.
Chill out and have some fruit or something

I think the thing to keep in mind is how we are in fact installing apps without really questioning what we are handing over to them. I was more concerned about learning how the flashlight app was a serious security breach than the pokemon security thing. In the end though, I DO still have pokemon installed. I have only bothered to get two pokemons tho. I really do need to get out more.

No kidding.
When the app needs your location to work, you expect a certain level of invasion.
But the flashlight app? Why does that need access to anything?

great question, but no one was asking why it wanted access to everything. You just assume it is just a flashlight and a harmless app, yet it isnt. weird eh?

Click the Poké ball icon in the center bottom of your screen, then select the icon a little to the left with a Pikachu on it that says "Pokémon"

Jesse was telling me some of the strange places people have found them.
One guy found a Ghastly in the Labour room his wife was in.
Jesse found a Pincer(?) Right beside Aaron's bed.
He also found something on his nightstand around 3 in the morning.

Well, I don't usually know what YOU'RE talking about, so we're even.
Do you mean you DON'T know what Pokemon GO is? Or how Lily has claimed that big bad flan habitually mocks her children?
Why would fruit help? If YOU want fruit, have at it.

Which was EXACTLY what I posted in the OP.
Today I have been to the dentist, the grocery, the post office, the credit union AND Michael's. Why do I "need" Pokemon?
You don't and nobody said otherwise. I guess your time out from baiting lily is over or maybe LL just hasn't seen it yet. lily never said anything to make it about her. That was you flannie.

The teens today live online. They really don't care if their personal info is out there or not. It doesn't faze them.
It isn't just teens playing this.
And I got my kids to adjust their settings.
But yeah, people from 7 to 80 are playing.
It's kinda cool.

I must have missed when you were made a MOD.
Discussing does not equal baiting. YOU know damn well what BAITING is.
Baiting is blaming liy for making this about her when she did no such thing. lily could post that the sky was blue in you'd get your panties in a wad because she dared to believe the sky was blue when you were sure it was gray.

My kids are playing it too. It's just another fad game. They will play for awhile and it will be all the rage. Then something else will come along.
People have been playing Pokemon since the 70s.
They've grown up with it.
This is just the latest evolution of the game.

I think it is cool, I like that it gets them outside. I was a bit surprised by how many adults, like middle aged people, are playing.
Like I've said, they've grown up with it.

Point out where I said I was a Mod. I don't have to be a Mod to post my thoughts anymore than you do. You didn't discuss. You got mad that lily was making it about her when she did no such thing. YOU DID!
