My BIL is getting married in six weeks.  I want/need a new dress.  What do you guys think about this one?  Be honest.

With the black on the outsides, it is slimming. It looks a bit casual to me though I am not sure how fancy the ceremony is.

I love it, but I'm not sure it is wedding apparel unless it is casual. I would wear it shopping or out to lunch or to work. My office is pretty casual.

This looks very comfortable, but also very casual. Since its family, I'd go with something dressier, unless the ceremony is on the beach, or a field.

Were you looking for a long dress?

 

I've seen this dress on and it is lovely, the photo doesn't do it justice. You can dress it up with jewelry.

It's an outside wedding on the third of September in Texas. It will probably be over a hundred degrees. I am unable to wear heels due to my knees and I'd prefer not to have heat stroke. The male guests will be wearing jeans or khaki's and a dress type shirt. I don't know what the women will be wearing.

That shows too much leg for me.  Even though it's covered per se.  I'm getting a small pearl necklace this week that I'll probably wear.

ETA:  Yes.  I need a dress that is long.  I sit awkwardly due to the knee surgeries.

Then yes that dress will do nicely. Flat sandals will look nice with it.

I was going to say it would work for an outside wedding but then thought, doh she's in TX nobody would have an outdoor wedding in these temps. Guess I was wrong!

I can't believe anyone would plan an outdoor anything in the heat. I hate heat. More & more every Summer in fact.

Take a battery operated personal fan in your purse.

It will be hot. Trust me. We picked an important date in September to have ours. The 18th. The expected high for the day was supposed to be 81. Hot but doable. It ended up soaring. It was 91. I was miserably hot in my layers and layers upon layers of dress.

I have no idea why outdoors. They've been dating for four years. Then six weeks ago he popped the question. Now six weeks later they're getting married. They've already been living together in a house they've bought about a year ago. I have no idea. I did not expect them to get married this quickly. My DH is close to his brother but they talk about guy things. Not houses and getting married. This is my BIL's fourth wife. Her first marriage. I didn't even expect him to remarry. I figured he'd just live with her. But my DH was telling me he thought she was the right one. So basically, I have no idea. I'm not privy to that info!  biggrin

She and my VSS SIL are very close.  They're both in they're late twenties.  DN is a year older than my SIL.  I am extremely older than they are.  I don't really fit in with them.  They're into having babies and clothes shopping and gossiping about important stuff.  Like movies.  My life doesn't really parallel theirs.

 Well, I can tell you all my lovely expectations of wearing a beautiful veil all day died very quickly.  It's amazing how fast dreams can be quashed by the Texas sun.

Thanks SB.  I usually don't do bright colors but I've been yearning for a dress that's different.  All I have are boring plain dresses.  And I thought it looked really slimming too.

Sounds like a casual wedding and I think the dress will be fine. The best part is you will wear this dress more often and since it is a outdoor wedding in Texas you will be more comfortable.

DH likes the dress and said buy it! I'm down to two dresses and one skirt that I don't have a shirt to for various reasons. His first response though was, "Why don't you wear your wedding dress? You spent so much money on it (NOT) and only wore it once!"

I think it's a pretty dress.

I don't think it's appropriate for a wedding though, just because of how loud the colors and design are. You don't want the attention shifted from the Bride and Groom, to you, if you can avoid it. I'd suggest looking for something in that same cut but of one simple color or maybe a few shades of one color at most.

Just my humble opinion, of course.

A pantsuit can be nice. I don't wear dresses so my go-to is pants with a nice top - 3/4 or full sleeved if it's cold or sleeveless if it's warm. I don't like most prints so both pants and top are black or dark blue.

As far as #3, if I had to choose between your pick and this dress only...it would be #3.

Now, I don't know how heavy the fabric is, so that would be a factor for me.

The dress you posted (orange/black/white) is WAY better than anything your DN suggested.
I'd dress it up with white sandals, white bracelets/necklace, and maybe a thin white shawl for when you go inside for the reception. It IS going to be inside? Right?
