Yes, in my line of work this is quite common too. Even if the old part is non-rebuildable and only worth scrap, the seller has every right to get it back and make sure it is the same part as the one they actually sold and not the old unit. I commonly place stickers/tape that cannot be removed and transferred on parts I sell and record the serial numbers of higher dollar items, People will try anything these days and it seems reasonable to require the part be returned.
