Cop impersonator prompts car stop safety tips from police

July 20, 2016 By Gary Dymski   gary.dymski@newsday.com

Nassau County police on Wednesday offered safety tips to drivers when being pulled over after a suspect posed as an officer to rob a man in Woodmere.

In the robbery about 3:45 p.m. Monday, a suspect flashing lights in his black Jeep pulled over and robbed another driver on Broadway, police said.

The victim in the robbery had his wallet taken, and the suspect neither wore a uniform nor displayed a badge, police said. Police released a sketch of the suspect.

In Wednesday’s news release offering advice to motorists who are pulled over for a traffic stop by an unmarked vehicle, police said to call 911 to verify that an officer is indeed making the stop.

Police also said:

  • Drivers should activate their emergency lights to let police know they realize they are being stopped.
  • Drive to a well-lit area.
  • Keep doors locked and ask the officer for proper identification.
  • Request that a marked unit respond to your location.
  • Do not exit your vehicle until verification that it is a valid vehicle stop.

Police said if anyone has more information on Monday’s stop by the man posing as an officer they should call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All calls will be kept confidential.

Sounds good until the officer yelling "Get out of the car with your hands up." Not a lot of time to ask the officer for ID; request a marked unit, etc. The officer is the one in command of the situation and the person who was stopped does not have a lot of say about anything, especially at the beginning of the stop. If a man with a gun pointed at me is yelling that,

it doesn't matter whether he's a cop or a crook.
