Whatever you use (conditioner, oil, mayo, etc), you need to leave in on at least overnight, longer if you can do it. It smothers the adult lice, and prevents the nits from hatching. If you can, put it on in the morning, cover with a shower cap, leave it on overnight, and shampoo it out the following evening (1 day, 1 night, 1 additional day). Oh, and only use real mayo - not Miracle Whip !
Also remember to wash the bedding and do a kill cycle on the pillows.
Pillow in a hot dryer for 30 minutes.
I did it daily for 30 days.
Any soft surface, stuffed toys, couch cushions, need to be treated as well.

Thanks for all of the tips! I just got an update from my friend. Apparently she only found five nits on her DD and no actual lice. She did the combing, hot water washing thing and I rechecked my DD's hair (for the millionth time because I was so freaked out).
She doesn't have anything but just to be safe, I washed her bedding and gave her a bath with lavender essential oil in her bubble bath. Then I washed her hair with coconut shampoo and after I rinsed her I massaged a combo of peppermint, lavender, and tea tree oils into her scalp. She smells like a spa! So, here's to prevention and (hopefully) overreacting! I need a damn beer. Ugh!
She was pretty funny about the oils. She actually asked me if I would do that same combo on her scalp after every bath. Haha. Oh, and as it turns out, our house bunny LOVES the scent of those oils. She smelled them on my hands when I was changing out her hay and she kept jumping onto me. The only other time I've seen her behave this way is when I bring her fresh basil (her FAVORITE). I tried to get out of her way but she grabbed my ankle. All of our cats scattered to the wind (they usually all hang out together) because she was acting like a nut. I looked up rabbits and essential oils and all three of the ones I used are safe (and apparently bunnies love them). Ya, you don't say! LOL
I certainly hope so! I have been psychosomatically itching all day... like when I found a spider the size of my hand guarding her egg sack in my garden. Ahhhhhhhhh.... scratching all day.

If it helps you feel better, I've been itching my scalp since your first post.
