Jesse is going to need more expensive gadgets for college.

Pens that record, notebooks that download to the computer, a laptop.

I'm really praying he qualifies for help in paying for these things.

It gets pricey.  My son is starting college in August too!

Other than the laptop, I don't think those gadgets are a "need". He can take notes the old fashioned way if he can't type fast enough, and transpose them into the computer later. It would actually be a good study exercise.

 He's autistic.

There are both mechanical and processing issues he deals with.

His brain doesn't function "the old fashion way".

He is looking to major in communications, languages.

He will minor in business administration.

Our middle school tried that.

It was $25 for the "kit".

My son starts monday and I have yet to get everything. I am dreading this cuz there is always something out of stock and you cant find anywhere. You would think the schools would have someone that would pre-purchase kits for the schools and sell them for parents like me that are too lazy. (LOL!)

I can't buy those kits, I'm too picky.

Besides, I suffer from a complex that makes me give my children all the pretty stuff I couldn't get as a child.

In middle school, there were certain items that were required and everything else was a violation.

You had no choice but to purchase the kits and the kid could not have any other product.

Thankfully, that only lasted 3 years.

For kindegarten I shopped myself. Three different stores, hours of my time. So not worth it. Then my neighbor told me about the kits. I order the supplies in July and schedule shipment for August so I don't have to store it all summer, too.

I just don't understand all the angst about school supplies. Pens, pencils and a couple of folders and notebooks. Done. Takes like 30 seconds.

Wow - quite the list. How did we ever manage to get out of elementary school? We were required to have paper & pencils from what I remember. Oh and book covers.

We covered out books with brown paper bags. My mom was a pro at it. Then I could draw on it if I wanted. Lots of doodling. Pens, pencils, paper, a folder. (No pee chee for me, my dad prefers generics). They say it's because of budget cuts.

Your kids are not in elementary school anymore either.

High school is a whole other beast.

My kids had lists just like that...20 years ago.

You are the first person I've ever heard of not getting a list like that.

Ours for Jojo looked like FNW's list.

DD12 had a list for each class. She's in 7th grade.

Yep.  This little caveat is at the bottom of all of our lists...

**Please note that additional items may be requested by individual teachers**

Yeah, that's on every list.

Along with the supply fee on top of the lists.

Yep.  At my kids' High School, it was $25 a class.  And electives were WAY more than that.  I think Drama was $100 a semester.

I don't think I've been assessed a "supply fee" on top of having to buy supplies, and DD is a senior this year. I won't know what all supplies she needs until classes start. I do pay out the nose for her to be in Marching Band, but it is an elective, so that one doesn't bother me as much. This year, they are going to march in the Macy's Thanksgiving parade, so it is a very **very** expensive year....

ETA: DS' 5th grade supply list is similar to what FNW posted.

 Yup.

The clubs each have dues.

French, German, Spanish, Drama, Yearbook, Chess, Newspaper.

It gets pricy, fast.
