Dear Carolyn: I certainly understand not wanting advice shoved down one’s throat, but if you are complaining or even just telling a story of something that happened in your life, then you’re kind of opening yourself up to getting advice, no?

Yes, i think it does invite advice. If you don't want advice from people, then don't discuss it with them. It's just the natural thing for most people to do.
