GOP Must Dump Jesus or Risk Irrelevance in ‘Post-Christian America’

Salon Magazine has accused the Republican Party of being out of touch with “post-Christian America,” warning the GOP that if it doesn’t renege on its alliance with Christianity, it will soon become irrelevant.

Ted Cruz’s failure to get the GOP nomination, Matthew Sheffield proclaims in Salon, “is a perfect window into trends that will set the pace of American politics for decades to come: Americans are moving away from Christianity, including people most likely to vote Republican.”

To back up his claims, Sheffield cites the 2014 Pew Research study finding that 23 percent of Americans say they’re “unaffiliated” with any religious tradition, up from 20 percent just three years earlier.

Video: USOC apologizes to Rio, calls out swimmers' robbery story

The trend away from religion, and Christianity in particular, Sheffield argues, is the real cause of Republicans’ woes and their failure to win the last two elections.

“The likely reason why Republicans have declined in popularity among the non-religious is GOP’s long habit of identifying itself as a Christian party,” he states. “The later attempt to add in a “Judeo-” prefix has done little to stop the bleeding.”

While the statistics showing a rise in the religiously unaffiliated are undoubtedly sobering to people of faith, Sheffield fails to mention that the very same Pew study showed that over 70 percent of Americans continue to identify as Christian. That means that to an overwhelming majority of Americans, God matters.

And while Sheffield rightly notes that atheists overwhelmingly vote Democrat, he comes up with the unlikely conclusion that Republicans should slough off their historical friendliness with religion in order to keep up with social trends. In other words, Republicans should repeat the Democrats’ mistakes of alienating the pro-life community, religious believers, and traditional families in the hopes of pandering to the relatively small group of religiously unaffiliated.

While observing that “the religiously unaffiliated appear to have a real preference for Democrats,” Sheffield insists that Republicans could cut into the Democrats’ voter base if they would just abandon the illusion that Americans still care about God.

“While secular people have always favored Democrats for as long as the data goes back,” Sheffield says, “the situation has actually become even worse in recent years for the GOP.”

If the GOP would just sell its soul and dump its religious constituency, Sheffield suggests, things would go a whole lot better. This includes a full embrace of same-sex marriage and other positions at odds with Biblical morality, in the name of political expediency.

“Regardless of what happens to GOP candidates in November, Christian conservatives face a choice,” Sheffield concludes. “They can embrace identity politics and become a small group of frustrated Christian nationalists who grow ever more resentful toward their fellow Americans, or they can embrace reality and render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s.”

Many other plausible theories could be advanced as to why the Republican Party lost the last two elections, none of which would involve its supposed over-dependency on the Christianity of its base.

Nonetheless, a more important consideration should be made here.

Although the Republican Party espouses no particular religion and many of its members care more about the economy and national security than religious belief, the GOP has been a home to many people of faith, including those who have felt betrayed by the Democrats’ callous treatment of believing Christians and Jews.

What Sheffield seems not to realize is that for many Americans, the choice of being Christian is not just a means to a secular end. Embracing or rejecting faith in God is not the result of a political calculus whose ultimate goal is mirroring societal trends and thus achieving popularity and victory. To let social surveys dictate one’s political platform, raising a finger to the wind every time fashions change, is to have the shallowest of views of the meaning of politics.

Many Americans still believe that political parties should ultimately be guided not just by pragmatism and polls, but by deeply held convictions concerning the common good, justice, truth, and the welfare of all citizens.

And for many, those convictions not only tolerate religious faith, they are born of it and sustained by it.

Is this a "Christian nation"

I don't ever want to see a Christian GOP

and a "Jewish" party and

a sharia Law parry.

Ed, plain and simple, this nation has turned it's back on God.

That is why we are in the shape we are in now.

If political leaders have to become atheist to succeed in America, it is no longer America.

I grew up in America when the doctrine of Separation of Church and State was important.

"One Nation, with Liberty and Justice for All."

Then in the 1959-1960 school year, two words were added to the Pledge of Allegiance.

One of my Jewish classmates was dragged / carried out of the Junior High auditorium

and paddled for refusing to say those two, new words.

So much for Liberty and  Justice.

How is 'under God" a violation of your Jewish friend's religion? Do Jews not believe in God?

When I grew up in the 1970's my BFF's religion prohibited her from standing and saying the Pledge of Allegiance at all. So she sat quietly and looked down every morning. I asked her about it, and she said she was not permitted to put any nation above God. While she may have been teased by some of the other children, the school had no problem with it and did not attempt to interfere in her beliefs or practices. But the other 300 students were not forced to engage in conduct which aligned with her beliefs, either.

This.  There was a girl in my class that was Jehovah's Witness.  She sat quietly during the pledge.  She couldn't come to birthday parties either. She could come AFTER the party (skating/sleep overs) but could not be there for the celebration...

Dragged out and paddled for not saying two words?

How'd anybody know?

Separation of church and state is not removing God.

It's not using religion to punish.

And while I'm not Jewish, I know that Jewish people believe in God.

And the Christian God is the same God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.

So "under God" is not another religion's god.

What I find ironic is Jews that claim "Jews for Jesus" are not really Jews, and yet Jews that don't believe in God at all still are. How does that work?

Jews for Jesus are Jews that believe Jesus is Messiah and they have accepted Him as their personal Savior.

Yes, I know.  But they are still of Jewish heritage.

The Jewish faith calls for a messiah. The only real difference between Jews and Christians is that the Christians believe that messiah has already come, and the Jews are still waiting for him.

"Jews for Jesus" is a Christian organization dedicated to converting Jews to Christianity.

It's a scam.

Reform Jews are taught to question everything.

Who wrote this book? Who translated it?Who translated it next? Do the translations remain true to the original?

Conservative and Orthodox Jews are taught to follow Traditions, for the good of the Community. Questioning is encouraged in a learning environment.

Jews for Jesus was started by Jews that converted to the Christian religion because they believe Jesus is the messiah of the Jewish teachings.  It is not a scam.  And becoming Christian does not strip them of their Jewish heritage.

Yes. It is.

Because once you belive that Jesus actually was the Son of God and you accept him as your Savior, you are to follow Christ.

Ritual is not a relationship with God.

Lily, being Jewish is about more than religion.   Jews share specific genetic markers.  Judaism is a religion and anyone can convert to it or practice it.  But you can be born Jewish.

I completely understand that.

Which means there are Christian Jews.

Just like Christian Americans.

Christian Samoans.

Christian Inuit.

And there are tons of secular Jews in Israel that don't believe in God at all, and are still considered Jewish.

Race or Religion? Jewish Genes Identified

The age-old debate over whether Jews constitute a race or a religion appears to have been settled by the science of DNA—and it is a Jewish scientist who has finally established the facts.

chosen-gene-580-border

According to an article, “The Chosen Genes,”  published in the Washington DC-based journal,The Chronicle of Higher Education, the “story of Jewish origins, once the province of historians and religion scholars, is now being told by DNA.”

Harry Ostrer, Jewish Professor of Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (located in the Bronx, New York), said that he had “developed systematic ways to separate Jews from non-Jews.”

According to The Chronicle, Ostrer’s work “shows that geographically and culturally distant Jews still have more genes in common than they do with non-Jews around them, and that those genes can be traced back to the Levant, an area including modern-day Israel.”

”It shows we share in a biological tapestry, and are connected by these genetic threads,” Ostrer was quoted as saying in the article.

The DNA that he found also tightly linked Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews, two prominent culturally and geographically distinct groups; and some of these markers are shared by the present-day Palestinians.

Ostrer has published a new book, Legacy: A Genetic History of the Jewish People, issued by the Oxford University Press (one can bet the OUP will not be publishing anytime soon a “Genetic history of the European People,” though).

In the book, Ostrer “traces efforts by himself and others to map both the genes and the culture of Jews as they spread throughout the world, and he shows how the approaches can complement one another. He also takes on the volatile topic of population traits, arguing that it is extremely difficult to ascribe things like higher IQ to Jews,”The Chronicle continues.

Ostrer’s work has been endorsed by other leading geneticists, the article says. “Mary-Claire King, a professor of genome sciences at the University of Washington who was the first scientist to use molecular analysis to date the evolutionary split between humans and chimpanzees, writes in an e-mail, ‘The approach that Harry uses … lets the data speak for itself. It does not group people from different traditions a priori. The result is that people sort out, based on their genetics.’

Ostrers’ work has provoked a hysterical reaction from some other Jews, though. Shlomo Sand, a professor at Tel Aviv University whose 2009 book, The Invention of the Jews (Verso Books), argued that Jews arose from converting many local communities in Europe and elsewhere, told Science magazine regarding Ostrer’s findings that “Hitler would certainly have been very pleased.”

Ostrer was however, less pleased with this comment. “Bringing up Hitler was overheated and misconstrues my work,” he responded.

The Chronicle went on to discuss the reality of genetics and how it could help determine racially-specific medical treatment:

“He [Ostrer] has been lobbying the New York City Council for half a million dollars to buy four gene-sequencing machines for the medical college. They would be used, he says, to analyze genetic risk factors for diseases like prostate cancer or diabetes in the African-American and Hispanic populations that surround the college in the East Bronx. ‘The council seemed very receptive to my argument, which is that the poorer people in New York should have access to the most modern medicine,’ he says.

“His interest in the genetics of Jews also originated in medicine and attempts to understand why certain populations have higher risks of particular diseases, like specific forms of breast cancer. Years ago, while a professor at NYU, Ostrer started a project to identify DNA sequences that marked such populations. The sequences could also indicate how closely such groups were related, a kind of Jewish family tree.

“The differing DNA stretches are called haplotypes, and what Ostrer initiated, with several colleagues, was called the Jewish HapMap Project,” The Chronicle said.

This project has definitively shown a genetic commonality amongst Jews the world over, a remarkable achievement given the nature and length of the Jewish Diaspora.

“The only people it [Ostrer’s findings] would shock, says Seth Schwartz, associate director of Columbia University’s Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies, are those who believe that Judaism was created through conversion and intermarriage in many places outside the Middle East. ‘I think that paper blew Shlomo Sand’s arguments out of the water,’ he says.

“That argument, Schwartz says, is a modern reflection of a mid-19th century view among some Jews in the reform branch of the religion that Jewish identity had become secondary to the rise of the nation-state. ‘That view didn’t deny the genetics of Jews. It just said it wasn’t important. It said that now we are part of nations like Italy or Germany, and that’s our primary national identity and affiliation. Judaism is our religion.’ But it was not a widely held view. Traditionally, most Jews believed in a shared Middle Eastern origin. ‘Now we have a biological translation of the traditional story,’ says Schwartz.”

 Lily,

If we met and you told me you'd grown up in a  Jewish home, and attended Hebrew School as a child,

how long would it take me to figure out that wasn't entirely true?

Constitutionally speaking, "In God We Trust" is actually against the First Amendment. As an individual and free citizen, I can trust in God, as an individual and free citizen, you can trust in God. But we, as a country, are constitutionally bound not to.and were so bound for almost 200 years.

Well, you can be a heathen if you want and turn your back on God, that's your business.

I don't care if my belief and my proclaiming my belief and my practicing my belief offends every last person on the planet.

As long as I don't offend God.

He is the ONLY one I never want to offend.

So I'm going to let my little light shine.

And I'm going to keep on praying and praising and talking and living in a way that puts God front and center.

Cause I don't want to get to Judgement day and have Him remove me the way the world wants to remove Him.

It's unbelievable to me how many people actually don't know how to comprehend what they read. The constitution does not require religion to stay out of government - because each person is allowed to practice their religion and people are the ones that run the country. It is VERY clear that is says CONGRESS SHALL MAKE NO LAW abridging freedom of religion. Telling someone they can't vote their conscience, whether based on religion or not, would be abridging that freedom.

It won't be the words they can't read.

It'll be the writting.

Remember what Arafat said in 2002..."The Arab woman's womb is my greatest weapon."

It is estimated that the average American millennial will have .5 children per family. They simply do not want to have children. Arabs, however, will produce 5, 6, 7 or more children per family. Bringing in more Arabs into this country, what do you think will be the end result? This is their plan.

Other races don't bother me.

Actually, I'm fascinated by other races. Their culture, foods, ways of doing things. Love learning about other others.

My problem is with people who would kill me if I didn't fall in lockstep with them.
