I clean my purse out periodically. Usually don't replace it until it breaks.

No, we don't.  You said you keep one in car with your stuff in it.  Just because you are not carting it into the store doesn't mean you aren't using one.

It could be a grocery bag.

It just happens to fit between the seat and center console.

But no, I don't carry it around.

That's carrying a purse.

If it's just sitting there keeping your crap from sliding under a seat, it isnt much more than a utility bag.

You are carrying it around - in your car.  And I don't care what it could be, it is what it is.

You can try to pretend you don't "carry" a purse, but you are splitting hairs, and it is a silly thing to claim or argue.

No. What's silly is arguing that havinga purse in the car is the same as carrying it in to places.

"Carrying a purse" generally means taking it in, actually having it on your arm.

Not sitting in a car.

I have about twelve othere purses and wallets in my closet, guess I'm carrying those as well.

But what do I know?

I got a little tool box in the van!

Guess I carry a tool box, too.

It's cute. Grey with shiny silver toned latch and handle.

Oh and I have a CD bag in there.

Red with black trim. Carry that, too.

There's a small first aid bag! Carry it.

The VCR that came with the van has a handle, so am I carrying that or is it just in the van?

I often leave mine in the car - that doesn't mean I don't carry a purse.   Not carrying a purse means not using one, not that you leave it in the car.

It doesn't make any difference until you claim you don't "carry" one.  You most certainly do.  It goes with you everyplace you take your car, and it holds stuff women traditionally carry in a purse.  You are carrying it - you are just using your car to do it.  The fact that you leave it in the car is what does not make a difference.  And it's a completely silly claim to make, and an even sillier one to argue about.  And I've take up the argument with you, which has made me feel silly, but damn, woman, sometimes talking  to you is like banging my head against a wall.  You just dig in about something and cannot possibly conceive of anything other than what it in your head.

I don't carry a purse. I carry a handbag. And yes, there is a difference and the difference is its cost. Mine are investments - I carry them for years - and they are nice. One of my only indulgences is my handbags and idgaf who doesn't like it. 😊

I'll be the dumb one, what's the difference?  I always thought purse and handbag were different names for the same thing. Like soda or pop

Price doesn't change what they are.

Size does.

A handbag is generally larger, while a purse is smaller.

I have both and totes.

I have purses that was well over the $100 mark and handbags that was not.

Not according to Miss Manners. It's all about the price.

Also your better department stores all call it the "ladies handbag department". It is NOT called "purses". It is because of the cost. In fact one department store, I forget which, will tell a customer who is looking for purses "sorry we don't carry any" and direct them to the handbag department instead.

I have a small coin purse I use like a wallet, just credit cards, money, and id.
Chapstick and cell phone and such are usually just in my pockets.
I call it my purse, because I refuse to call such a pretty thing my wallet, but I think a wallet is a more accurate description.

Well, when I worked at the Agner retail store, it didnt.

Nor when I worked at the Claiborne store.

And that's what we were told to say, but on the inventory invoice, it was about size.

In the U.S., handbag and purse are pretty much interchangeable, but the industry prefers "handbag" as do older women - who also use "pocketbook" to confuse matters further. In England, a purse is something small you put in your handbag, like a coin purse, wallet, etc., while a handbag carries everything.

Personally, I have always thought a purse has a shoulder strap, and a handbag has handles, but that's my personal differentiation based on nothing.

Handbag just sounds snootier so, of course, that's what better department stores are going to call them.

I've always heard that price is the difference between a handbag and a purse. Personally, they're all purses to me.

Well, I went to Amazon and tested this.

First, I put "handbag" in the search engine and got mostly structured, handled, professional, dressy type bags.

Then, I put "purse" in the search engine and got mostly more casual, non structured bags with some type of shoulder strap.

Size, nor price, seemed to be a factor.  Amazon has spoken.

 Yes, most definitely a handbag.

I KNEW someone was going to throw this wrench into my theory!  Damn you, Vette!

I think it's going to depend on the structure, most of the time, it will be a handbag, because the handles are more prominent.  Will it stand alone will nothing in it, or slouch?  For example -

Handbag -

Purse -
