While I admire her sacrifice to save her son, it was needless. Had she and her son been following the rules, and perhaps the law, not to mention the basics of boat safety she would be alive today. Boating with children and not wearing life jackets is reckless.

You cannot underestimate water. It is very powerful. And, children on a boat should absolutely have on a life jacket. Adults should too but nowadays it doesn't seem anyone does anymore.
People nowadays think that the laws of nature don't apply to them. "It won't happen to me" syndrome or something. What makes you think that your family is above the law? Or above the law of nature? Water is dangerous. This woman made a noble sacrifice - but had she had the sense to put life jackets on herself and her child, she would be around to raise him.
Reading all the comments in the article about how noble she was is kind of making me sick. She was reckless. And stupid.

I know. Even with life jackets I am always a ball of nerves on boats with my kids.
Did the mom not know how to swim or something? I don't understand how she died.
I am guessing that in her struggle to keep her son above the water she drowned. He was probably struggling and fighting her in his fear. She probably gulped down a bunch of water just keeping him alive. It took her brother a few minutes to get to her - that's all the time it takes.

Stopped reading comments after 10 of them. Holy Cow, she was in the water for only 5 minutes and drowned?? I suppose she was panicked but still that is ridiculous. She must have not been a swimmer, that is the conclusion I come to. and not wearing a life jacket. Also, it was their house boat? Which means they lived on it and should be well versed in safety procedures. How tragic.

If she wasn't a swimmer AND she wasn't wearing a life jacket...that's even more ridiculous. I only know one adult who isn't a swimmer and she makes her kids wear life jackets when they play in the ocean. My DD is a trained lifeguard and this woman still makes her kids wear life jackets because she can't swim and save them herself. And I respect her for that. The woman in the OP is a flipping idiot.

A flock of flirting flamingos is pure, passionate, pink pandemonium-a frenetic flamingle-mangle-a discordant discotheque of delirious dancing, flamboyant feathers, and flamingo lingo.

If you cannot swim, then you absolutely should be wearing a life jacket at all times. And, children should always wear them.
DH is an excellent swimmer - I'm not. I can do a frantic dog-paddle but only about the width
of a pool. I ALWAYS wear my life jacket - from the moment I'm about to board the boat until
I'm back on shore. There are always - always - enough life jackets for everyone aboard the
boat - including the dogs if one particular friend is with us. And all of the cushions can be
used as life preservers.
Even if you are a good pool swimmer, consider that open water swimming is quite a bit different. I swim fine in a pool. But, i haven't gone swimming that much in the lake or ocean so if was out in deep water, i would wear one.
The cold water in a lake or ocean will take your breath away, even if a strong swimmer, will take a few minutes to acclimate to. A life jacket is such an easy fix.

Year or so ago there was a Dear Abby/Ask Amy post from a wife regarding her husband's family drinking and boating and not wanting her to have her child wear a life jacket.
Husker was offended that the wife would have the audacity to tell her husband that thier chi,d was not going on the boat without a life jacket. And then tried to downplay boating accidents.
The he issue was more about a lowly woman telling her husband and HIS family no.

Even just having cushions which are flotation devices. She could have thrown out a few of them and used them to keep her afloat.
It said this kind of boat can't stop or turn around easy. If she lept overboard when her child did and the boat kept going, even if they threw cushions overboard, they probably weren't near her.
