  • NFL star said he'll sit until flag 'represents what it's supposed to represent'
  • Sparked controversy by not standing for the pre-game ritual on Friday
  • 49ers quarterback says he doesn't care about the consequences he faces
  • He said definaitely on Sunday: 'To me this is something that has to change'
  • The player added he hasn't heard from any senior officials since Friday

  • Players and fans have since slammed his decision as disrespectful
  • Some of his teammates agreed with his view, but not how he showed it

Colin Kaepernick plans to sit through the national anthem for as long as he feels is appropriate and until he sees significant progress in America.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback said he will not stand to honor The Star Spangled Banner, unless he feels the flag 'represents what it's supposed to represent'.

The NFL star sparked huge controversy by staying seated during the pre-game ritual before he took to the field against the Green Bay Packers on Friday night.

Players and fans have slammed his decision as disrespectful and there have been calls to be dropped by his franchise.

He knows he could be cut by San Francisco and lose sponsors as a result of his stand, but remained defiant on Sunday.

Maybe he should donate all his salary to charities that promote civil rights, or to help the inner-cities by starting business. He needs to put his money where his mouth is.

He needs a good punch in the teeth.

This is why I think some kind of military or civil service should be required.

The flag represents the freedom that allows him to make this choice.

He's making this "all about ME". This is a big distraction for the team.

I don't have a problem with him doing this. He has the right to. I just don't think he should expect everyone to look the other way. Being surprised there is backlash is silly. What did he expect ?

I have a problem with him doing this.  He can go out at and speak as a citizen about whatever he wants.  But, he is on the job.  He is making this all about him at the expense of his teammates.

Until he does something like this, he is an a$$ sitting on his a$$.

I don't buy his bull$hit because he was fined not long ago for using the N-word towards other players.  He just wants attention.

I didn't say it did. Just that my tiny little niece has more honor and fortitude than some loser playing a game for a living. I'm allowed to think he's a loser because of those freedoms she fought for too.

Pretty easy to just sit down and do NOTHING. How he gets off his overpaid arse and goes and volunteers in a homeless shelter? Or becomes a Big Brother. Or hands out food in a food bank, etc.

And, of course, the white house is supporting him.

Perhaps it isn't the ones coming into the country that we should be concerned with as much as the ones from here who don't appreciate what they have.

President Obama said this:“In general, what I can say is that I certainly don’t share the views that Mr. Kaepernick expressed after the game in explaining his reasoning for his actions. But we surely all acknowledge and even defend his right to express those views in the settings that he chooses. Even as objectionable as we find his perspective, he certainly is entitled to express them.”

Absolutely...100%

But that doesn't mean that he's not going to suffer consequences for his actions...

I defend his right to be an a$$hole. I also have the right to call him out on it. Part of what makes our society great is the right act on our beliefs, so long as that action doesn't harm others. Sitting down during the National Anthem harms no one. So I defend his right to do it.

Doesn't mean he isn't an ass for doing so though.

One of the sacrifices of freedom is the fact that others may not want to do the same things, act the same way, or believe the same beliefs as the next person after them or the person before them. And that's okay in a truly free society.

He is working while doing this - he's not doing it on his own time, and he's bringing attention to his team, not just him individually. If his team, coach, or the team owners have issue with it - they should do what they feel they need to.

Exactly.  If he is doing this while not a work, then fine.  Go to an interview and spout off or whatever.  That  is a different thing.

Did anyone see that he showed up at a press conference with a Fidel Castro tshirt on? Oh the irony!

That tells me he's just trying to get attention.

Agreed. And whether or not he's required to stand for the Anthem is something they might be able to take up with him. Either now, or at his next contract negotiation.

I was just saying it's not up to us or the government to make him stand.

How to tell when someone is doing something for attention versus doing something for a cause = One, requires minimal action with the maximum amount of exposure. The other requires maximum amount of action with minimum amount of exposure.

If he REALLY wanted to stand for 'oppression' going on, he would put his million dollar money where his mouth is, and he would DO something other than 'sitting this one out'.

He's never known oppression.

He has no clue.

Bet he won't use a dime of his money to start a scholarship program or build a library in a ghetto or provide daycare so poor parents can work.

Bet he has never even stepped foot in a soup kitchen or housing project.

His adoptive parents lost 2 children to a congenital heart defect before they adopted Colin. When he signed his first NFL contract, he asked his parents to find a charity that helped children with heart problems so he could donate a portion of his first NFL paycheck to help the kids like the brothers he never met. Ever since that day, he has worked at a summer camp for children with heart problems, volunteering hundreds of hours. He has raised awareness for this camp and had helped them raise over $900,000.

Say what you want about his exercise of his freedom - but don't assume you know everything there is to know about him. He is humble and does not brag about the charitable acts he does because he was raised Baptist and believes in doing good works privately and not bragging about them like some pro athletes. So yes, he DOES give of his own money and his own time to help the less fortunate. Stop criticizing him for what you THINK he MIGHT be like and stick to critiquing him for refusing to stand for the anthem.

He is being criticized for not respecting a country that embraced him and he obviously doesn't return that sentiment.  Instead he thinks the US is not to be respected.  But how many other countries could he be adopted by loving parents who raised him well and a country that did not take all his cash so he had it to donate?  not many, but yet he still disrespects the country, not buying his sad sack story.  He needs to move beyond his "oh poor me" attitude and wake up and see what has been given to him from this Country.  Let's start with Opportunity.

Reread this thread. He has been criticized for a LOT more than that. People have called him out for not donating his time and his money to charity. Except he HAS. They are taking a particular stand he has taken and assumed what kind of person he is from that one stance. They happen to be wrong.

This is not about his stance on standing for the anthem. This is about his personal time and money. And it happens to be incorrect.

People can criticize him for not standing for the anthem and for disrespecting the country. I don't have a problem with that. I think it's pretty crappy to assume he is a diva who doesn't give to charity or volunteer and is a total diva when you don't know the whole story. Just because he does one thing you don't like doesn't mean he is a total degenerate selfish twit. He might just be doing one thing you don't like.

Ironic that you mention opportunity. He is helping the pediatric heart patients because if it were not for the 2 sons of his adoptive parents who died of heart conditions, he never would have been adopted by them. It is because of the very opportunity he was given that gives so much time and money to that charity. He does it to honor the sacrifice of the brothers he never met who gave him the life he has now.

He's scum.

A portion of one pay check? That's anything from 1% - 100%.

Helped raise? He endorsed something? Lent his name?

Volunteering how? There are a lot of ways to volunteer.

He needs to show respect to the men and women who fought and died for his chance at opportunity.

Oppression of black people?

He's never been oppressed a day in his life.

He, himself, is an example of non-oppression.

He's a glory hound looking for a bone.
