Eyewitnesses on the ground report the aircraft’s erratic flight, ending with a crash in the field.

10:15 AM – Collapse of the Pentagon E Ring

At the time of the attack, the Pentagon was under renovation and many offices were unoccupied. Because of the renovation, only 800 of 4,500 people who would have been in the area were there. Furthermore the area hit, was the section best prepared for such an attack. The renovation there (improvements which resulted from the Oklahoma City bombing) had nearly been completed. It was the only area with a sprinkler system and it had been reconstructed with a web of steel columns and bars. This reinforcement kept that section of the building from collapsing for 30 minutes, enough time for hundreds of people to crawl to safety.

10:28 AM – Collapse of the North Tower

Miraculously, a section of the North Tower’s stairwell B survives the violent collapse, shielding 13 first responders and a civilian evacuee who are still attempting to evacuate down the stairs.

“A 110 story building fell on us, and I’m looking up at the sun.” FDNY Lt. Mickey Kross, Engine 16, originally presumed dead.

1:00 PM

Throughout the afternoon, volunteers, first responders, and construction professionals arrive at the site to help search for survivors.

“I didn’t want to see what I knew I was going to see.” John Napolitano, retired FDNY firefighter.

3:00 PM

Rescuers extract Port Authority employee Pasquale Buzzelli from the rubble of the Stairwell B.

5:20 PM – Collapse of 7 WTC

Because lower Manhattan’s waterlines have been compromised, and FDNY cannot get water to the flames, WTC building 7 collapses after burning for hours. There are zero casualties due to the prior evacuations.

8:00 PM

Rescue workers locate trapped PAPD Officers Sgt. John McLoughlin and Officer William Jimeno in the debris of the World Trade Center. They free Officer Jimeno after three hours and Sgt. McLoughlin after 11 hours of dangerous tunneling work. Workers will then extricate the eighteenth survivor, Genelle Guzman-McMillan from the remains of Stairwell B on the afternoon of September 12th. She will be the last person rescued alive.

8:30 PM

President George W. Bush addresses the nation.

“America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world, and we stand together to win the war against terrorism.”

I was on the beltway headed for home (4th car out of the garage) when the first tower fell, and I was on the cell phone with my friends in WV, checking in.

Watching the recorded broadcasts this morning. Cried again when the plane's hit as well as when each of the buildings went down.

America has forgotten... male Muslim extremists did this to us. And it is going to happen again.

my town has this wonderful park and a 9-11 memorial was built there. The centerpiece is a 30 ft piece of steel from one of the towers. The design is a walkway up to the steel. The path follows the direction of one of the planes with headstones detailing the timeline as described above.

I haven't been to the Pentagon memorial yet. I need to add that to my list. I would like to see the Flight 93 Memorial as well. I was in the courtroom during the sentencing phase of the Moussaoui trial and heard the ****pit recording. It was horrible.

We have a very nice memorial here too. We were so scared that something would happen here too. We are right in the middle of it all between NYC, DC and Shanksville.

I had a 7am (central time) class. We had no idea anything was going on. I got back to the dorm, took a shower and turned on the TV when I returned to my room. I remember standing in the middle of my dorm room in a towel, dripping, just staring at the TV. I was just in time to see the first building fall.

As I watched all this unfold on TV that horrible day, I prayed, like millions of other.

And this scripture practically burst into my head.

And every time since, when I think of that day, and while reading this OP, it's here, in my head again.

Ecclesiastes 3King James Version (KJV)

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?

10 I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.

11 He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

12 I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.

13 And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.

14 I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.

15 That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.

16 And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.

17 I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

18 I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.

19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.

20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

21 Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?

22 Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?

Whenever I read the accounts I think of them telling that the building was secure and to return. I vow to never listen to someone else about my safety - I vow to get out and stay out. Even if it hurts my paycheck.

I totally agree on that! I was watching some documentaries on it and was horrified to see they were telling people to go back to their desks. But hindsight is 20/20 isnt it. How could they have known? How could ANYONE have know what was really happening at that moment, and what was to come.

Now we know that you cant rely on what others tell you to do. If you dont feel safe... trust your gut and get out.
