A two-vehicle crash on the eastbound Long Island Expressway in Yaphank left a man with serious injuries and tied up traffic at the height of rush hour Friday, police said.
An unidentified man was changing a tire in between the left lane and center median, just past the exit ramp of Exit 66 when a car struck his vehicle at about 5:55 p.m., police said
The man was transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center via a Suffolk County police helicopter with serious injuries, police said.
The unidentified female driver of the other vehicle was not injured and stayed at the scene.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Suffolk County Police Sixth Squad detectives are investigating.
This is why I have JAF, which is the equivalent of the AAA in the US. Never do anything; let them handle it. Get on the cell phone; they come right out.
Never in the median
On the shoulder? Only if it is VERY wide, and I could get the
car almost off the shoulder into the grass. And then I would
call AAA! Otherwise, I would drive to an exit, and call AAA.
Just a pop and I made it to the side of the road across 3 lanes.
Had 3 kids with me.
Caitlyn alerted dad, (he was about 20 miles ahead of me with mom and the other 2 kids)
I didn't get out of the car before SC DOT pulled up.
He had my tire changed in less than 3 minutes.
Dad pulled up in time to help load the car back up.

AAA. Totally worth the few dollars a month. And I've used it for my kids...even strangers. I get 8 "events" a year. I've called them for other people on the side of the road...

It'd kill me if I had to sit and wait for someone else to do what would take me minutes to do.
My kids know how to change a tire, as well.
I don't know, I'd just rather get it done and be on my way.

Had a blow-out on the Henry Hudson Parkway (west side highway) in NYC -
small Chevy Chevette. Seconds after I edged over to the side of the
highway (no real shoulders), a driver from NYC Blood Bank pulled up
behind me - lots and lots of flashing lights, so I was no longer in danger
of being hit from behind. Within minutes, the driver had changed the
tire, and put the flat in the back of the car. The only thing he asked
was that I consider donating blood the next time my company had a
blood drive. I pulled out my 14 gallon pin, and showed it to him. With
that, he gave me a huge hug, and wished me a happy and safe journey.

(I now have an 18 gallon pin.)
There were two heroes there
