Has anyone here been to Niagara falls? We are thinking about going there for our honeymoon but I'm just wondering what else there is to do there besides stare at a big waterfall. TBH it's not my first choice but I'm trying to be open minded!

Nope. But I do have trip planned in which we drive up, spend a day or two, then meander back home hitting all the historic places on the way.
Someday, I hope to execute the plan.
But, yeah, I think there is other stuff.
One side has a waterpark if I remember correctly.

it is beautiful and breathtaking. Not all the attractions are a must see, but many are very interesting. Maid of the Mist I really liked. There is a new zip line that is truly for the very adventurous. There is history if you are into that sort of thing. Time your trip, if you go to see the light shows over the falls.
I loved it each time I went. I went to Buffalo for business a lot and always went over to Niagara falls. I went once went the dead of winter, truly outstanding.
There is a lot of hokey nice, Mdme Toussards etc, but it is fun.

I don't know what else there is to see/do in Buffalo except stare at the falls. And they are beautiful. Well worth a trip, but I'm not sure how many days you can spend there. I went with an old boyfriend who was from there and we stayed with his brother. I was really disappointed with the surrounding area. The falls are spectacular, but outside of the park is very....industrial... I understand the falls are much more beautiful on the Canadian side, although we did not go because the line of cars was pretty long. If you don't mind getting drenched, you can take the boat trip underneath (Maid of the Mist). I went on a holiday weekend, and was told the water level was raised for the holiday which gives a much better effect.
The Canada side has much more to do. There really wasn't anything on the U.S. side. But hotels there will have honeymoon packages and stuff. But the falls are beautiful, as is upstate New York.

So are you saying you need honeymoon ideas? Cuz Colorado has TONS of things to do.
Yes we really need ideas because we can't seem to come to an agreement. I want to take a cruise somewhere, he doesn't want to leave the u.s. because he doesn't want to bother with a passport

I would love one of those river cruises! But they would require a passport as well.
Vette, is it that he is afraid to travel abroad, or just doesn't have any desire to leave the U.S.? I know my mother could care less about leaving U.S. soil, although she could be persuaded to visit the U.K. and look up our ancestry.

Vette ~
What time of year? Alaska and the Inward Passage are good,
but not during the heat of summer - GIANT gnats!
The Mississippi Queen and the Delta Queen are great trips -
wonderful scenery, great food, entertainment.
How about a train cruise? Spectacular views, entertainment,
food, all included. And there are even some where you can
get off, do your own land excursion, and get on the next
train through (you'd have to pack VERY light )
Fall, then maybe Vermont or some of those amazing covered bridges and fall leaves.
Summer, just about anywhere with a beach.
Spring, someplace with an awesome botanical garden.

We did the Alaska cruise. I wouldn't really call that a river cruise, but we could see land on both sides while on the inside passage. It was pretty awesome. That whole trip was awesome, well, except for our encounter with the grizzly bear cubs. That I could have done without.

They totally upgraded us on a the cruise we took for our honeymoon. We were even bumped up to first class on our flight. All we had to show was our newly printed marriage license and it was like magic.

We were hiking up part of the Chilkoot Pass with our guide, where we picked up rafts to go down the river. While on the rafts, two grizzly cubs came in the river and were curious, so they started to come after us. We remained calm (as calm as someone can be when being chased by grizzlies) and he paddled us away and they eventually lost interest.

That would be scary, good thing mama grizzlie didn't show up.
We went to Cherokee, NC for 4 days and then over the mountain to Gatlinburg for 3 days.
We made candles, ate fudge and window shopped.

Went to Niagara Falls as a teen. We did the thing where you dress up in raincoats and go behind the falls. Totally awesome.
Hmmm other destinations. I could make a few days our if Chicago - museums, riverboat cruise, parks and zoo. Then you could hop to Wisconsin to the Dells, or door county. Also the Grand Hotel. I can't think which Island but it's no cars - just horses and bikes and walking and has this big historic hotel called the Grand Hotel. It's the hotel where the movie "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve was filmed. I have always wanted to go there.

Our guide seemed to think they were at the age where they left mama and were venturing out together. The next year they would separate and be independent. While we were hiking, he showed us signs that bears had crossed our path minutes before us, so he knew they were in the area. (fresh, half-eaten salmon, etc.) DH said he never saw me hike uphill so fast. It was salmon season so my guess is they were distracted by the abundance of food to continue sniffing us out.

This. There is nothing to do on the American side. It's more a national park type of environment than it is touristy. It's the one time we got it right and didn't commercialize a national treasure. The Canadian side has the better view and all the stuff to do. Riding the Maid of the Mist is tons of fun and so is going behind the falls. There is a lot to do and many nice restaurants to go to. We used to go every few years and we never ran out of things to see and do.

Can't you get a, I don't know what it's called, but it's more of a card than passport to do things on the Canadian side and then come back to the U.S. side?

Yes but to get it you might as well get a passport. A passport is more versatile.
