I have a Windows 7 Pro 64bit laptop.   Yesterday it decided that it could not download Windows Updates and claims it has not done so since July 12 which is a lie because it also shows updates installed up to Oct 1.   I can no longer designate Automatically download updates; instead the frequency page has a huge X and tells me to search for updates now.  Which I do and the search just goes on and goes on and goes on.

Tried the Windows Troubleshooter for Windows Updates and it found 3 problems and claims to have fixed them.    But still the same inability to automatically get updates.   I am using Firefox; I notice some of the help offered by Windows states I must use IE 11 to get into the Windows Update catalogue, etc.   Before I get into that, I wondered if any of you were having or have had the same problem and what you are doing to did to resolve it....

Of course I could always buy a new computer that has Windows 10......   But I like my Windows 7.... LOL

I am thinking maybe a System Restore to an earlier time or to delete the update .NET Framework 4.6.1 that was installed yesterday. Uninstall it; check if things are normal again or not. Just don't want to mess up the computer.

Oh, where oh where is a junior high school kid when you need one???

Lol Karl, your computer "lied" to you. So I can't help you but I do know that Microsoft does anything and everything to get rid of those non microsoft apps such as firefox. That system restore will work for awhile but a time will come where the older version will not be supported and thus virus protection will go by the wayside.

Microsoft is no longer supporting Windows 7. I'd still keep it as long as you can - the updates are often unnecessary.

Thank you both for your posts. I did go ahead and do a System Restore, changed Windows Updates to "download them but let me decide what to install" and ran the Windows Update Diagnostic Tool, which found two items to fix. Now everything is back to "normal" and hopefully will stay there for a while.

Keep windows 7 as long as you can regardless of whether it updates or not. WE updated to windows 10 with MUCH trepidation and we hate it. We thought it was going to fix the lag that we cannot seem to solve regardless of what antivirus and crap browser cleaner we get, but upgrading to 10 only made things worse. Now, the computer still responds slow AND we cant figure out how to find anything. Honest.. you have to relearn EVERYthing.

So yeah. I hate windows 10. And I am hating microsoft right now.

I learned a long time ago that Microsoft doesn't understand what the words "update" and "upgrade" actually mean.

Sorry you are having trouble. I agree with turning the updates off. But don't "download and let me decided when to install them". Tell it to not even check for them. Otherwise it will be constantly bugging you to install them.

OK, sounds like a good plan to me.
