We have several in our home and have had them for many years. I can't say I've noticed anything special about the air or whatever but they are beautiful and create a warm and cozy atmosphere. We will turn them on after dinner, in the living room, and turn all other lights off. Then we'll sit quietly or maybe have a gentle conversation some tea. The warm glow is very calming and there's a peace about the space. Honestly, I think it's all about the light and not much about the cleansing properties. For ions to be released from the salt, they would have to get hotter than would be safe for private use outside of a lab. So, there isn't much to the science of their cleaning claims. They are pretty, though.
I'm thinking they might make nice gifts for Christmas.

I have one in my family room and one in my office, and I like what they look like. sort of peaceful I got mine on amazon, they are little chunks of salt in a wire basket

I am the total opposite, I can sleep through anything. Lights blazing, TV on, conversations happening around me, won't wake me. My cousin and I shared a room at my sister's last weekend. She was like, man you phone makes all kinds of noises all night. I had no idea, I sleep right through them, and the first three alarms I have set.
I use to be able to sleep through noises, lights at night have always been a problem for me.
But after I had kids, I swear a change in breathing can wake me up.

We have himalayan salt caves here. You really just sit there and soak up all the 'goodness' that the salt is supposed to possess. Some people love it, and I'd like to try, but not sure it's the best use of my money. Maybe they'll do a groupon.
