And this election is the example of the difference. If our country was a democracy - Hillary Clinton would be our next president. But, we live in a Democratic Republic.
Our nation is made up of states. Within those states, we elect our Representatives to send to Congress to make the decisions, we do not make those decisions directly through direct voting/majority wins.
The same applies to our election. We vote within our states, and our states sends the electors to choose the President. It is set up purposely this way so that larger states with higher populations are not solely in charge of choosing the President for the smaller states - it is so that all the states get a say. A smaller say, but one nonetheless, and one that when combined with other states, has an impact.
In simple terms, I told my daughter that we are a republic made up of states and the states elect the president. That each state's decision is based upon the people within that state - that's the democratic vote, but that whoever wins that state chooses who the state will vote for.

It's what we are. We are a Republic of Independent States. Unless you are going to end that (and I don't think people really want to do that) - it is what it is.

And if people had a grasp on basic high school civics, they would understand this.
Heck, I think there is a Schoolhouse Rock song about it.
For those who need a shorter, less complicated, version.

But if each individual person cast their vote it wouldn't matter what state we lived in would it?
In this particular election I'm glad it came down to the electoral vote but I'm not 100% in favor of the electoral vote in general.
There is no state with less than 3 electoral votes. Basically, the states like Alaska with very small populations would be ruled over by everyone else's choice.
It's complicated. But it also keeps different state rules from affecting too much. As an example - states that don't have voter ID laws. Do you really want the whole country to be subjected to California's laws that allow hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens to vote?
I mean, Hillary won the popular vote by a very small margin, how many of those were the illegal aliens Obama encouraged to vote?

I don't really understand how illegals can even register to vote. I had to include my social security number on my registration form. Or don't they have to register in no ID states?
The winner of the world series is the one who wins more games, at least 4 out of 7.
Now, in those games, one of the teams could have won by 20 runs, say 27-7. They won that game. But the rest of the games, each team only scored a couple of runs back and forth.
The number of total runs don't matter, the number won games matters.
So, think of the Presidential Election as 50 different games (states). The number of points in all the games combined doesn't win it - you've got to win more games over all.

Nope, sports doesn't help. I guess I'm a visual learner. I actually know I am. I used to take notes in colored pencil & then when taking the test would recall the color & remember the notes.
