One year our cat kept climbing the tree. But he would get up there and couldn't figure out how to get out. My dad would have to reach in there and yank him out.

That sounds pretty funny, DG.
I guess one cat wasn't enough to ruin a tree.
(I've got six of them, running around the house. And Shop Cat, up in the master bedroom.)

Shop Cat doesn't cause any trouble, up there.
The funniest part is my dad hates cats. So there was some (a lot) of grumbling everytime he had to retrieve my cat from the tree.
DD just adopted a kitten and he is into everything including her tree. I told her to squirt him with water. She laughed because silly kitten keeps getting in the shower with her. He loves the water. She researched and discover cats hate the smell of oranges. She bought some generic orange scented air freshener and sprayed her tree. She said it was like having an invisible fence around the tree. She resprays every couple of days.
My problem is the dog. Corgi is short enough he can walk under the tree, but his back brushes the branches. And he has been known to drag the lights with him. It will be nothing short of a miracle if it doesn’t come down.
