What is the meaning behind the song?

I am totally in love with the A Cappella group called Pentatonix. I found a song of theirs so melodus and pretty... have it on my phone now as a holiday song. Yet now that I actually pay attention to the lyrics, I was kinda grossed out at what I believe is a sinister meaning behind it. 

Here is a theory I saw on a different website.  What you guys think?

During the French Revolution, mobs of revolutionists beheaded those (such as royalty -- I'm sure you've heard of Marie Antoinette) who were against the revolution. Revolutionists would gather around the guillotines in "packs" to watch the beheadings. The fashion then was to wear high-collared coats, which may have appeared to "swallow" the individual. Also, I found a painting depicting a beheading scene in the French Revolution. The revolutionists in the illustration wore red scarves around their necks, perhaps to symbolize their loyalty to the revolution. Perhaps "Michael" didn't wear a red scarf or did not support the revolution, and thus he was quickly beheaded at the guillotine. 

"I was following the pack all swallowed in their coats" -- someone was following the revolutionists on their way to the guillotine to behead those who opposed the movement. Perhaps this person was for the revolution and was a friend of Michael, or he too was on his way to the guillotine.

"With scarves of red tied 'round their throats" -- the revolutionists wore red scarves to symbolize their loyalty.

"To keep their little heads from falling in the snow" -- in order to keep from being beheaded, they wore the red scarves to show others that they were for the revolution. 

"And I turned 'round and there you'd go, and Michael you would fall, and turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime." -- Michael did not wear a scarf or did not support the revolution, and thus he was quickly beheaded.

Wow.

Beautiful music, but I do not like the theme story. It gave me a creepy feeling.

Evil wrapped up in pretty music.

I like them.

And, yes, the song is dark.

But so is Ring Around the Rosey.

And most nursery rhymes and stories.

Lily has a good point. So many nursery rhymes are political statements of the times, disguised as children's rhymes and stories...

I love Pentatonix, and according to an interview with Pentatonix, here's the answer to where the name came from:

"
3) How did Pentatonix come up with their name?

The name is derived from the Pentatonic scale, which is a 5-note scale widely used in all types of music. We thought it would work for our group because we want our music to be universally accepted, but we added the “x” cause we thought it was cool :) - PTX

I love the song itself because of the catchy melody and rhythm... then I was like "wait... snow turning red?" and tried to look up the meaning behind the song. The original writer claimed somewhere that the lyrics are meaningless, but I dont buy that. Not when they are so very specific with such a dark turn of the words. Eeek! But yep, it makes you think of ring around the rosey eh? And now my 12 year old likes it too but he hasnt quiet caught on with the dark lyrics.

And regarding the personal stances of the individuals in the group, I really couldn't care less. I am not a person to refuse to enjoy something based on someone's personal stance. To do so, I would have to be completely removed from the world. If they were to lets say sing a song about how great it is to be gay, or how black lives matter and white people are horrible, well then of course I wouldnt buy that cd. ;)
